got racism?

Date: April 09, 2004 | 17 Safar 1425 Hijriah
Subjects: islamophobia
Three recent headlines:

Imam's wife assaulted at Maryland mosque

Tampa police investigating battery of Muslim woman as hate crime

Arson attacks target San Antonio Muslim businesses

Whenever I post about an incident of prejudice or harassment experienced by Muslims in America, invariably somebody will post a comment saying "non-Muslims are treated much worse in xyz Muslim country".

Folks, that is completely irrelevant. It doesn't become OK to engage in bigotry just because someone else does it. If a person is being mistreated because of their religion or ethnicity, it should be a concern to all people who care about justice, wherever it happens.

America is a much better place than this. Let's get back to showing it.

It's apparently alright for the US to bomb mosques and kill worshipers therein.

Thanks for the alternate link. I don't seem to remember registering for the site but it could be one of those that hides its content behind registration after a day or so. I use Bugmenot to get around those pesky logins.

What inspired this post was getting an email from the Muslim Civil Rights Center that had those three one right after the other as the top stories sad

I heard about the mosque bombing too and that the U.S. is announcing its right to bomb mosques whenever they feel under attack from them. Of course, this was always the case but announcing it is no way to "win hearts and minds". I wonder if we'll finally stop pretending that's what we're doing over there. It would almost be a relief.

Better yet, though, let's get the UN in and get the US the hell out!

Subject: Racism

Perhaps it could be called racism if there were a race of Muslims. As there doesn't appear to be perhaps bigotry or religious intolerance may be better.
I hate the Welsh is racism.
I hate Sethians is religious intolerance.
I hate short people is bigotry.

Yes, I suppose that is true if you want to be pedantic about it, though given that most Muslims are non-white and it appears that many of these incidents seem to be people of a different race than them, I think that racism in the literal sense is probably also part of it.

Besides, it made a catchy title. Please allow me a little artistic license on my own blog wink
