Oh, God. Not again.

Date: March 11, 2004 | 19 Muharram 1425 Hijriah
Subjects: condemn, terrorism
Was it al-Qa'ida? ETA? Whoever is responsible for this atrocity will face the wrath of God for the mass murder they have committed. My prayers are with the victims and their families. May God ease their pain and help them cope.

Update 3/13: According to this news report, it's looking a lot like ETA was responsible.

Update 3/15: Abandoning the previous line of investigation, they've now decided it was al-Qa'ida after all. Not sure what happened to the previous line of evidence.

Update 3/16: Was it all lies and manipulation by the Spanish government to blame ETA and not al-Qa'ida?

Of course we do not know at this point of any definite ties to Al Queda or any other so-called Islamic fundamentalist group, but such speculation is inevitable and therefore needs to be addressed. I am not a Muslim person and therefore cannot speak with any authority on the teachings of Islam. However, no organized religion teaches that this kind of violence is justifiable, whatever the cause it is attempting to promote. It seems to me the worst form of blasphemy to commit these crimes in the name of any religion, and that the leaders of such efforts to use religion as an instrument of murder are the worst form of infidel, the very definition of a false prophet. I conclude that there is nothing fundamentally Islamic about these groups at all, and would suggest that we refer to them as what they are: terrorist criminals and nothing more.

As for the political justification of such crimes, there is none, and it is a failed strategy to attempt to promote any cause in this manner, however sympathetic one may be to it. It is, in fact, counterproductive, as millions of people around the world who could have been sympathetic to a given group of oppressed individuals are rendered entirely unsympathetic and, indeed, repulsed. Let us all hope that this very dark phase of human history is short-lived.

Asalamu alaykum,

I read in our school newspaper some comments about by some of our university students studying abroad over there. It's like their september 11th they said. I really feel for them.

The condition of the world is not good, and these acts are not the cause, but must be the symptoms because there is a lot of killing going on, but I don't know, God knows best.

There is a lot of things I wish I could do for a lot of people.

May Allah make them rest in peace and be of the dwellers of Paradise, ameen.

Asalamu alaykum wa rahmattallah,

John

Subject: Madrid bombing

As with the attacks in Karbala, I agree wholeheartedly with your views, al-Muhajabah. Whoever did this it was wicked and cowardly; in both cases innocent people were simply going about
their business - getting to work, or celebrating an important holy day. As Tom says, there is nothing "religious" about those who did this. I join in the sadness and prayers for those who have suffered.

David
