Islam in the digital age (redux)

Date: February 27, 2004 | 6 Muharram 1425 Hijriah
Subjects: books
Last July, I mentioned Virtually Islamic, a blog by Gary Bunt, a lecturer in Islamic Studies at the University of Wales Lampeter. Gary's blog contains links to stories about internet technologies, Islam, and the intersection of these two topics.

At the time of my previous blog entry, Gary had just published a new book called Islam in the Digital Age. I finally came across the book in a local bookstore last month and purchased a copy.

The subtitle of the book is "E-Jihad, Online Fatwas and Cyber Islamic Environments". It looks at various types of Muslim websites (the "Cyber Islamic Environments") with a particular focus on online activism (e-jihad) and spreading of Islamic knowledge and rulings.

(note: a "fatwa" is simply an opinion by a qualified Islamic scholar about an issue of religious practice; observant Jews ask for similar opinions from rabbis)

The chapters on e-jihad range from hactivism (hacking, cracking and other disruptive cyber activities) to militant or "jihadi" websites to online peace activists responding to 9/11.

The chapters on online fatwas survey various types of websites that provide Islamic advice and rulings, both Sunni and Shi'a.

The book is short and surveys only a few of the many sites of only two types. It's certainly not a comprehensive guide to the Muslim internet, nor does it pretend to be. However, for those who are interested in exploring activist or fatwa sites, the book provides and excellent, thoughtful guide to the most prominent sites. Gary knows what he's talking about.
