some religions are more equal than others, it seems

Date: February 19, 2004 | 27 Dhu-l-Hijjah 1424 Hijriah
In Germany:

The western German state of Saarland today became the fifth in the country to propose legislation that would ban Muslim teachers from wearing headscarves in public schools, AP adds from Frankfurt. The proposal states that neutrality in public schools must not be endangered “through political, religious or ideological displays” and specifically names wearing headscarves as an example. Displaying Christian and Jewish symbols, however, would be allowed under the law because the teaching of Western religions is part of the public school curriculum in Saarland, a conservative-governed state on the border with France.
Meanwhile, in Australia:

Islam was an illegal religion because the Koran preached violence against Christians and Jews, a Christian group told a judge yesterday. The group's barrister, David Perkins, said that Christianity was established under Australia's constitution and had special protection, especially through the blasphemy law.

Mr Perkins told the Victorian and Civil Administrative Tribunal that if the state's new religious hatred law intended to fetter the teaching of Christian doctrine it was invalid.

Victoria's Racial and Religious Tolerance Act 2001 referred to lawful religion, and it was in that sense, he said, that by preaching violence Islam was disqualified.

"The Koran contradicts Christian doctrine in a number of places and, under the blasphemy law, is therefore illegal," he said.
Added: Meanwhile, back in America:

Fayetteville religious leaders are beginning to plan their National Day of Prayer gathering. Hundreds come together to hold a prayer service in front of City Hall on the first Thursday in May. Fayetteville's celebration is organized by a Christian task force. Although people of all faiths are invited to the service, no Muslim leader has been invited to speak. An imam has asked to participate in the past but that request was denied...

..."The President, President George W. Bush, when he sent the proclamation out, he was inclusive and anytime we have a National Day of Prayer, it should be inclusive because I know of no one that has a monopoly or a corner on the market on righteousness,” Imam Mustafa Shakir said.

The interesting thing I've noticed during the 'hijab issue' in France, and to a lesser extent in Germany, is that sections of the American press seem supportive of Muslim women's rights. How is it being covered over there?

This is a rather old entry, but I've just found your blog while looking around for RSS feeds. smilie

All of the entries are outrageous, and yet not surprising to me.
The political climate of many places, including the US, is unnerving for many who are minorities. It does seem to me though, that Muslims and anyone who "looks" Middle Eastern have experienced a marked increase of animosity in the last few years.

I do want to comment that N. C. is....well it's the south. That is why it did not surprise me. I moved to the south just over 2 yaers ago. I came from MD, not far from DC. So you can imagine the culture shock! However, I do appreciate the slower pace of life down here. I don't intend to stay permanently, but then...I start thinking maybe I can help change things...but then that "other me" says why on earth should I undertake the stress? Ah wll...these are own ambivalent emotions about the south.

At any rate, saddened? Yup. Suprised? Nope, other religions are regularly denied participation in "interfaith" gatherings in my area. How on aarth is having a variety of Chrisitan paths considered interfaith?

The Australian link is a prime example of why it is imporatant to modernize old and outdated legal codes. There are some rather amusing books detailing some of the outdated laws still on the books. Many times legislatures will resist, believing it to be a waste of their time. However, the danger is that there have been and probably will alsways be those groups who want to prosecute a specific group for being different and will then use those laws to futher their agenda. smilie
Peace and Blessings,
Harmony

It apears to me that most Americans are not paying much attention to it.....they may think it is bad, but are so involved in this horrible economy and trying to work on low wages, they just ignore things which happen in other countries except for violence.....I just wish the Virgin Mary would appear somewhere with her veil and show the Catholics that until some years ago, veils had to be worn in churches and nuns had to wear the veils and uniforms of a religious order. The pope in the the sixties said this was not a rule anymore......many Catholics left the church because of the changes which has been in place for many years and joined other Christian Churches.......The Catholic Pope is the one who said it was okay to bring slaves from Africa because they were "heathens". In this country, the radical Christian leaders are as bad as the radical Imans who are calling for the violence and holy war.......no one here wants war and most want out of Irag...and many want the Israelies to give the Palestinians their land and rights.....but basically, I feel it is all about oil and the big oil companies who are fueling these problems in Irag.
The Israelis are WRONG and they are the problem.....but why don't the Saudi's take in some Palistinians? And Pakistan is one of the biggest problems also....but the USA has encouraged the Afgan mercenaries for years, just like the French and the Russians....I would like to know why everyone fights in Afganistan for so many many years instead of helping them? I am not Muslim, but if they pass any rules like that in this country, I am wearing the veil out of protest.
Salaam and Duas

Just to remind everyone, I have criticized the Arab countries for the shameful way they treat the Palestinian refugees and I posted specifically about Saudi Arabia, and for many other things as well.

Ken, who keeps attempting to post to this thread, in case you don't get a clue from the way your comments come out as gibberish, you were banned from commenting on this blog a long time ago for violating the terms of service by making personal attacks on others. Your continued posts show no sign that you have learned anything or changed your mind since then and will continue to be deleted. As for the rest, I refer you to the first paragraph of this comment and to my archives. I speak up very frequently to criticize Muslim countries and Muslim groups when they do wrong and by now you must know that very well, if you choose to admit it. Much of this material is linked directly from the main page of my blog and I do not feel it necessary to repeat the entire thing every time I post about something else.

Sahih Bukhari Book 43 #624 - Narrated Anas: Allah's Apostle said, "Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or he is an oppressed one. People asked, "O Allah's Apostle! It is all right to help him if he is oppressed, but how should we help him if he is an oppressor?" The Prophet said, "By preventing him from oppressing others."

Allah SWT alone knows what is in the heart of any person and whether they are "bad". However, if a person does bad actions, it is our responsibility to speak up and call on them to return to righteousness. If a brother in religion is oppressing others, we should follow the Prophet's (sAas) command and work to prevent him from the oppression. And Allah SWT knows best.
