an opportunity, inshallah

Date: January 22, 2004 | 29 Dhu-l-Qidah 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: career, personal
I have a lead on a part-time job that might bring in a little money, inshallah. I would be working from home helping to write news releases for Solidarity USA, a civil rights advocacy group that focuses on Muslim issues. I submitted a sample today based on this news story about David Hicks, an Australian-born detainee at Guantanamo. Hopefully, Solidarity USA will like my work, inshallah.

I've posted my sample news release text in the extended entry.

Update: My sample text forms the basis of the final press release from Solidarity USA but you can see that a lot of additional detail has been included that I didn't have access to. Still, it's a start.

Australian David Hicks has been held in near-solitary confinement at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba for two years, awaiting trial - and his lawyer says that his mental condition is deteriorating. Major Michael Mori, Hicks's attorney, spoke to the press today.

Mori said that Hicks is suffering from the lack of outside communication and contact and can only concentrate on basic human needs such as food and shelter. Human rights groups have already criticized the indefinite detention of Guantanamo prisoners and alleged that they lead to mental degeneration and suicide attempts by the prisoners.

Hicks is almost unique among the 680 or so inmates at Guantanamo in having an attorney; only one other inmate has been allowed one. The U.S. Supreme Court will decide in July whether the other inmates must be allowed legal counsel as well.

Besides reporting on Hicks's mental health, Mori took aim at the system of military tribunals that the U.S. government has established for Hicks and five other Guantanamo prisoners. Mori said that the military tribunal would not be able to provide a fair trial for Hicks and that Hicks would have a better chance for justice if tried in his home country of Australia.

Hicks has not yet been charged with any crime. The government has not indicated when it will charge him or any of the Guantanamo prisoners, or whether it plans to provide trials for more than six of them. It is the indefinite nature of the detentions as much as the severe conditions that concerns human rights groups and other critics. Right now, Hicks and the other 680 inmates are left in limbo, without any rights. What does this say about the reality of the American justice system?

As salaamu 'alaykum,

Of course I don't know who else will apply, but to my mind Solidarity USA would be crazy not to hire you.

I actually thought of letting you know about this when I saw it advertised but I figured you already knew about it.

May Allaah (swt) give you whatever is best for you and your deen.

Salaam,

Abu Noor al-Irlandee

Thank you to everybody who posted with their best wishes. Jazakum Allah khayrun smile

It looks like they are going to hire me, inshallah. I'm making arrangements for them to fax their letter, confidentiality agreement, and W-4 forms.

It's only a part time job and will be on an assignment basis at first, but even $100 a week will help, that's how precarious my financial situation is. And it looks like there's a lot of room for growth here so I may be able to move into something better in the future, inshallah.

Assalamu Alakum Wa Rahmatulah Wa Barakatuh

I am always thoroughly impressed and humbled by your great achievements, your site is a great and powerful resource and I admire it greatly. Being from Australia, Hicks is a big issue for Australians in general, not just the Muslim community. I have not heard of Solidarity USA and will peruse them shortly.

I am often unsure where to put general comments, but I would like to say that after much moral deliberation, I consider Kucinich to be a decent choice for the US president. (Although I cannot influence the vote as I don't reside there!).

Insh'allah your part time job will help you.

Mach'allah, congratulations, may Allah Ta'alaa grant you success and the opportunity to advance to a full-time position incha'allah.

Do you think they'd be interested in opening a French Bureau?
