thousands in Iranian city killed in quake

Date: December 26, 2003 | 2 Dhu-l-Qidah 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: news
The AP reports:

Entire blocks of buildings lay crushed and survivors lined up blanket-wrapped bodies in the street after a devastating earthquake leveled nearly three-quarters of the Iranian city of Bam on Friday, killing at least 5,000 people and injuring 30,000 others.
Some reports suggest that the death toll may be several times higher than in this report. The earthquake measured 6.3 on the Richter scale and destroyed up to 60% of the buildings in the city.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. Surely we belong to God and surely we will return to Him.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent has established an appeal to support their relief efforts in Bam. Islamic Relief is accepting donations now.

The BBC has a report on Bam's architectural and historical heritage. The Washington Post also has a good report.

Note: The latest reports now put the death toll over 20,000.

Added: Information on more ways to help the Iranian earthquake victims are in the extended entry.

Killer earthquake's fury and resulting destruction is very tragic. The loss & suffering of so many is very painful. All our Prayers to the Almighty and to Mother Nature to calmdown, let peace and stability be restored.

Kudos to the president for quickly indicating the US will assist with medicine, blankets, food, etc. This is the kind of tragedy that draws humanity together. Iranians grieved for America on 9-11...

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un

What this reminded me of was how Allah is so powerful that he wiped out whole civilizations. For example, in Surah Ya Sin when Jibreel makes the cry to destroy the village.

20,000 people is a whole lot of people.

20,000! That is a little less than 10 times the amount of people whom died in the 9/11 attacks. It just shows you that, things happen. You dont see the Iranians threatening to invade countries that have nothing to do with the earthquake, why? Because earthquakes are from God. They just deal with it in Iran. And thats what we should have done on 9/11. Im not saying dont protect your own people! No, I believe in self defense. But the Iraq war was not self defense, it was totally unreleated. We just have to deal with things that happen, we cant just take revenge on every little things, we gotta let it go. Just look at Iran, they HAVE TO let it go because there is nobody to take revenge on.

Salam
