ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!

Date: December 17, 2003 | 22 Shawwal 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: islamophobia
Some days the news makes me gnash my teeth in frustration. Like today.

France is going to go through with the ban on hijabs and other religious symbols in its public schools. I think it's extremely unfortunate that they've chosen to put their ideology (secularism) ahead of basic religious freedom. I also think that the policy will actually increase radicalism among French Muslims rather than reducing it. Injustice usually does.

The article also mentions that they don't want Muslim women or their husbands to be refusing to see male doctors. A lot of women, not just Muslims, feel more comfortable with a female doctor and would choose a female doctor in preference to a male doctor if one is available. Is that not a valid choice? Do we have no respect any more for peoples' feelings of modesty and sense of privacy? My prayers are with all the Muslims in France who are just trying to live their lives and follow their religious beliefs.

As if this isn't frustrating enough, Pat Robertson is talking out his orifice again:

"Make no mistake about it - the entire world is being convulsed by a religious struggle. The fight is not about money or territory; it is not about poverty versus wealth; it is not about ancient customs versus modernity," the Christian leader said. "No - the struggle is whether...Allah, is Supreme, or whether the Judeo-Christian Jehovah God of the Bible is Supreme," Robertson said.
I've already dealt at length with the stupidity of this - because Robertson is talking out his orifice again, he means a purely Christian God, the Trinitarian one. Jews don't believe in the Trinity. DUH!

But there's more. Bob Dornan is getting into the Islam-bashing act too, all in the name of Christianity. And Daniel Pipes called Khaled Abou El Fadl, one of the most vocal critics of Wahhabism, a Nazi.

Lord, give me patience!

Added: Good commentary from a libertarian on the France situation. I don't necessarily agree with the rest of this blog, but on this issue Amy Phillips has got it right.

AMEN! I wish Pat Robertson would stick to preaching and stay out of politics...to me he is one of the most dangerous men in America, spreading his politics instead of his religion....talk about separation of religion and state here....he causes more prejudice than any one other American....I cannot bear to even hear his voice. And the propaganda HE spreads is as bad as any.
And, as for France banning the veil in schools, I am appalled. If it were nuns teaching in schools and wearing the tradition "habits" like they copy from the Virgin Mary in the Catholic religion, would they make the nuns stop wearing those???????? It's a sad day for France and my heart goes out to the children.

Amin, amin, amin.

The Islamic Human Rights Commission of London has two projects going on to help fight this legislation and Islamophobia in Europe in general, please visit www.ihrc.org and click on "campaigns"...and spread the word.

Subject: Don\'t do that

Gnashing teeth is not good. This ban can't realistically survive the forthcoming appeals to the European court of human rights. For now just sit back and watch the sparks.

I wish that the Muslim women and girls in France could be as sanguine. I feel for them very much. I hope that you are right, inshallah.

Dornan vs. Rohrbacher is about like pus vs. maggot. Anti-Muslim, anti-Asian, anti-Latino Orange County racists to the core, and their shared constituency is too ignorant to be at least embarassed about it.

And FWIW, some of the most reductionist, absolutist, proof-texting, militant, fundamentalist people I've ever met are so-called "secularists". But we already knew that, lol.

If France really didn't want trouble with radical Islam, they should have kept their rear-ends in France. They are only reaping what they sewed during colonialism. So my sympathy for poor widdle French society under siege from the big bad Muslim menace is limited. Nil, actually.
