the perils of electronic voting

Date: December 08, 2003 | 12 Shawwal 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: elections
Over at Open Source Politics, John Williams has written about Simulating Dodgy Voting Machines. You see, he created a program that is rigged to skew the ballot results while hiding that fact from the people using the program.

Check out the Electronic Voting Device Simulator. When I tried it out my vote was skimmed from the candidate I attempted to vote for (hint: the party is the name of a color) and counted for Bush instead. eek eek eek

I ran for public office in a small town in Pennsylvania. I won in the primaries. My opponent had a terminal brain tumour and knew he would not be able to fulfill his duties if he won, but he had held the office for some years and the party wanted him to run anyway, since if he won, and couldn't fulfill his duties, they could then, by law, appoint whomever they wanted. It was a close race. The same thing happened which in the Florida presidential race. Somehow, the ballots had problems and they had to do a hand count which took 10 days. He then won by a narrow margin. At the first meeting of the officials, his wife showed up and read a letter which told about his medical condition and how he couldn't perform his duties. They then appointed the person I beat out in the primaries. There are all sorts of political unethical activities which go on in elections. By the way, these were Republicans which did this.....and I had heard stories about past "missing" ballot boxes found in ravines discarded by unknown persons. Politics have had this problem long before computers.
Peace
