survey on Muslim women and mosques

Date: November 09, 2003 | 14 Ramadan 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: mosques
Via Procrastination, I found this survey on Muslim women and the mosque. The survey is intended for Muslim women only, to share their experiences with mosques. What is your regular mosque like and what are your experiences with mosques in general? How would you improve things, and what would your ideal mosque be like?

I do have certain issues about women and mosques, however, my major issues with mosques have to do with mosques that are primarily of one ethnic group or in which people only socialize with members of their own ethnic group. Since there are usually very few other white converts like myself, such situations make me feel very isolated and alone. The mosque that I currently attend is diverse and I feel much more comfortable there than I have in some other places.

Salaam,

thanks for filling out the survey, as per your request and some problems I see with the survey, I am continuing to tweak it. The changes will be made shortly, and I may send out an email to all of those who have already filled it out to note the changes if they'd like to resubmit their surveys. More details to come in the email

Thanks again
Javed

As-Salaam Alaikum,

Indeed the ethnicity thing is seen by many to be a problem. I've never encountered it really though. Probably because I've always been a minority so being a minority in an Islamic setting is indeed a wonderfully safe experience.

However, it is also good to have diversity. I find that most CBD mosques are multiethnic because they were designed to cater for the religious needs of city workers who are usually from a diverse range of backgrounds.

I think the way women are treated sometimes (esp. in the ethnic mosques) is disgusting. I was once in a certain ethnic groups mosque and a woman stopped by for Asr prayer and the Imam actually told her there was no room for women to pray in the mosque. It was a Tuesday or something so really there was plenty of room, esp. if following the Prophetic sunnah which never required phyisically separate spiritual spaces for men and women.

Wasalaam,
