Trent Lott (R-Miss.) responded: "We need to have a different mix of troops, is the key. We may need to move some troops around." Lott suggested moving more troops from the relatively stable south closer to the region around Tikrit, where attacks on U.S. forces have been common. He said there was a need for more trained military police, adding that his comments were not a criticism.
"Honestly, it's a little tougher than I thought it was going to be," Lott said. In a sign of frustration, he offered an unorthodox military solution: "If we have to, we just mow the whole place down, see what happens. You're dealing with insane suicide bombers who are killing our people, and we need to be very aggressive in taking them out."

"Mow the whole lot down" is precisely what the people behind the suicide bombers want. They (much like some parts of the American loony right) want an all out total war between the Islamic world and the west, and are trying to provoke the Americans into savage reprisals.The fact that they have no regard for the lives of Iraqi citizens has been obvious for their choice of targets.

Thank you. Savagery on one side does not justify savagery on the other side. We should have firm principles that we act according to, rather than just doing as others do.
