Imagine the America you want to live in #15

Date: October 26, 2003 | 29 Shaban 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: dialogue
This week's question is:

What hopes and fears do you have about the future of this country?

Post a comment and share your thoughts. Don't forget to read the ground rules for discussion! Please treat others with respect.

The basic rules I ask everyone to agree to follow are:

1) Listen with curiousity and respect.
2) Seek to understand others rather than to persuade them.
3) Offer what you can and ask if you need anything.
4) Speak honestly, but briefly so that others feel free to contribute
and be heard.

The basic principles of this dialogue are:

1) We need to get to know each other if we are to make America a better
place.
2) We can disagree on issues and still share common values.
3) Diverse experiences, opinions, and ideas create stronger dialogues.
4) Our lives and our future depend on human goodness.

I fear that America's foreign policy and warmaking will destabilize other parts of the world and lead to more violence and hatred, not less. This is what we see already happening in Iraq.

I fear that America's domestic national security policy is selling out our ideals of liberty and justice and not even gaining us anything.

I fear that our current economic policies, especially the coupling of tax cuts with vast increases in government spending will lead to huge problems in the future.

I fear that the increase in bigoted rhetoric against religious and ethnic minorities will make America a place where such people find it difficult to live.

Almost every aspect of Bush policy and of the rhetoric of his supporters fills me with deep pessimism and gloom. I love my country and that's why it hurts me so much to see the direction that we're heading. Dammit, we're better than this!

I too love America very much and it hurts me to see the way Mr. Bush and Mr. Ashcroft are defiling the principles of our country under the guise of protecting these principles. The price we pay today is the loss of our freedoms; the price we pay tomorrow is the loss of our American character, the respect of the world and our moral authority. I am not a Muslim but will defend to the death your right to practice your religion without interference or fear.

Yes, Steve! This country was founded on the notion that all people have a right to practice ANY religion, not just Christianity...it's weird the Jews are so welcome, but many are afraid of Islam which is a rightous and devout religion. We just need to teach our children that predjudice of any sort is wrong and to respect everyone and if America was like that and even the rest of the world, there would be peace. Israel, Pakistan, India, EVERYONE should life this way, not just the USA.
We are all brothers and sisters of this earth which is mortal and will not last forever. Why kill eachother over beliefs? We are such silly ignorant beasts. Peace to all.

Domestically, I wish for nationalized health care and better social aid projects to help ALL people regardless of religious affiliation or ethnic background. I wish for a wider-read American public willing to think critically about the United States' affairs. I wish for a separation between the religious right and partisan politics. I wish for a revocation of the Patriot Acts and a more realistic and fair-minded revision of immigration laws.

As for foreign affairs, I wish the United States would turn to the UN and put it to the good use it was founded to provide. I wish for a well-planned reconstruction of Iraqi infrastructure that could provide for a legitimate, stable, and popularly embraced government.

I don't feel like discussing the fears... I think there's more than enough positive to strive for; my energy would be better spent worrying about those.
