I'm sure you're familiar with the ongoing dispute about moonsighting. ISNA follows the rule of local moonsighting, at least for Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. No moon sighting in North America this evening, so Ramadan hasn't started yet. The masajid in my area follow ISNA; however your masjid may follow a different rule. I've noticed CAIR was citing Sunday in a lot of news releases, though I'm not sure why. They may have wanted to use the earlier date just in case that was it. Do you mean, that Ramadan starts by the sighting of the moon? That is my understanding of what the Quran and Sunna say. Or do you mean, the local moonsighting rule? There's evidence for both positions. In this case, I follow the ruling that my community does.
