Ramadan is almost here

Date: October 25, 2003 | 28 Shaban 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: ramadan
It appears that Ramadan will probably start on Monday, inshallah, although some communities may begin fasting on Sunday. It all depends on the sighting of the new crescent moon at sunset.

Coordination of moonsighting reports in North America is handled by the Islamic Society of North America, whose website is currently inaccessible due to excessive traffic, lol. (note: the site is now up again and reporting that Ramadan will indeed start on Monday for those following the local moonsighting rule)

Ramadan mubarak (have a blessed Ramadan) to all my Muslim brothers and sisters. May our fasting and our prayers be pleasing to Allah SWT.

Thanks for the link. My mosque's calender says it starts on Sunday, but I guess not.

I'm sure you're familiar with the ongoing dispute about moonsighting. ISNA follows the rule of local moonsighting, at least for Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. No moon sighting in North America this evening, so Ramadan hasn't started yet. The masajid in my area follow ISNA; however your masjid may follow a different rule. I've noticed CAIR was citing Sunday in a lot of news releases, though I'm not sure why. They may have wanted to use the earlier date just in case that was it. Allahu alim.

Yeah, I actually wrote about the dispute, only it was going on in Canada. I don't think it's of much significance though.

Do you mean, that Ramadan starts by the sighting of the moon? That is my understanding of what the Quran and Sunna say. Or do you mean, the local moonsighting rule? There's evidence for both positions. In this case, I follow the ruling that my community does.
