bigotry double-play

Date: October 23, 2003 | 26 Shaban 1424 Hijriah
It's not that I want this to be a blog that spends all its time reporting on stupid, bigoted things that people say. But it seems that people just can't help themselves.

Kevin Drum reports on this discussion that he heard on the Rush Limbaugh radio show:

Rush is in rehab, of course, so Tony Snow was sitting in and he took a call from Grand Rapids, Michigan. The guy is going on about the madrassas that Rumsfeld mentioned in his memo the other day, and says the real problem is, are we killing these folks faster than the schools can make them? Hmmm, says Tony Snow.

Yeah, says the caller. Basically, Rumsfeld is a pussy, and what we ought to be doing is bombing the madrassas, not bribing them or working with them.

Hmmm, says Tony Snow.

It's like the Mormons back in 1840, says Grand Rapids. They refused to accept the American way of life, they each wanted like 25 wives or something, so we took care of them.

Um, well, says Tony Snow, but bombing schools is really not the American way, is it? We, um, need to break for a commercial.

In fairness to Rush, I listened to him a bit in Fall 2001, and he got callers who wanted to do things like "just go ahead and nuke Mecca." He argued with them (and on anti-prejudice grounds, not just practicality).

If somebody called in to a radio show as widely listened-to as Rush Limbaugh's and advocated nuking Jerusalem or bombing yeshivas, how hard would Rush smack the caller down? I would be interested to know if that's how hard he smacked down the caller you refer to. Why is it so hard for people to understand that just as they feel outraged and angered by the denigration of Judeo-Christian religions, Muslims feel the same way when Islam is denigrated?

Come on, would you like to live in a country where your religion is treated like this on popular radio shows? I don't think you would. So don't expect Muslims to like it either.

A good point. I honestly don't remember the details that well.
