But the remarks by Justice Department spokesman Mark Corallo came just days before grassroots activists spanning conservative, liberal and libertarian ideologies were planning to converge on Washington, D.C., for a two-day conference aimed at getting more cities to enact ordinances opposing the USA PATRIOT Act. "That's unfortunate that they're doing that. It's misguided and, in a lot of cases, it's just downright silly," Corallo told CNSNews.com. "But...it's federal law. Would they have said...'I think that the federal government should not enforce the 1964 Civil Rights Act in areas of the country that say they won't comply or have town resolutions saying they would keep segregation and keep discriminating?' This is about saving the lives of the American people from terrorists."
