latest hijab controversy

Date: October 13, 2003 | 16 Shaban 1424 Hijriah
On October 1, Nashala Hern, an eleven-year old girl, was suspended from a public school in Oklahoma for wearing hijab, the Islamic headscarf. The school district prohibits all headgear as part of its anti-gang policy. It does not make an exemption for religiously-mandated headcoverings such as hijab or a yarmulke. I've been following this story by way of various Muslim civil rights mailing lists I'm on and it has now made it to CNN.

I continue to fail to understand how a piece of fabric on a woman's head causes any harm to anyone.

Update: Law professor Jack Balkin explains why Hern has the law on her side.

Update 2: CAIR has reported that Hern will be allowed to wear her hijab in school.

(sarcasm on)
Come on now, al-Muhajabah. All the latest studies show that the heascarf is the cause of marriage breakdown...
(sarcasm well and truely turned off)

Oh, yeah. I forgot. Seeing those "hooded" women going by will break apart any marriage. Silly me.
