To me democracy is not an end in itself but rather is the means to an end. I believe that democracy is the governmental system that is most likely to lead to liberty, which is what I truly hold dear. However, the simple fact of holding elections ("democracy") is not by itself a guarantee of liberty. Instead, citizens must take an active and engaged role to make sure that their democracy does produce liberty.Subject: Re: Imagine the America you want to live in #13
What I hold dear about democracy is its potential to foster a society where no one's rights would be violated. We would all be free to do as we thought right as long as it didn't interfere with another's rights to life, liberty and equal treatment before the law. plus, we'd have to stop people and groups from harming the commons, (the air, water, and natural habitats.) I think most people are willing to live without harming others, and how nice it would feel to have trust between people instead of anxiety and resentment. But how possible is democracy to achieve? It seems so easy to subvert. Right now my government is using my tax money to invade and occupy Iraq. my country has been an enemy of democracy in Iran in 1953, Guatemala in 1954, the Congo, etc., etc.Subject: Re: Imagine the America you want to live in #13
Democracy is where the rich and poor both have a say in economic and politics in their country. the rich of course do not like this and thus, destroy it.Subject: Re: Imagine the America you want to live in #13
I want to see peace among all people with everyone following the Golden Rule, "Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You." I want the media to quit portraying women as sex objects and stop marketing superficial consumerism and advertising to our youth which makes them think beauty and money and power is the goal of life. I don't believe in censorship, but I wish the media would take more responsibility in turning democracy into a circus of fools.
