right-wing lunacy watch

Date: October 01, 2003 | 4 Shaban 1424 Hijriah

In a column for Counterpunch, Ron Jacobs reports on the so-called Stop Terrorist Entry Program Act of 2003. This bill, which was introduced in Congress by Rep. J. Gresham Barrett (R-SC) on September 11 of this year, would permanent bar entry to the United States to ALL citizens of those countries designated as state sponsors of terrorism. Additionally, all temporary visitors (including tourists, students, workers, and others) would be expelled within 60 days of enactment. Fleeing one of those countries to escape persecution or worse at the hands of the government? Doesn't matter. Barrett doesn't want you in America and will send you right back to the country you fled.

Barrett is a freshman Congressman. He was elected to replace Lindsey Graham, who replaced Strom Thurmond in the Senate after Thurmond stepped down. Barrett was quite fond of Thurmond and after Thurmond's death, proposed naming the Capitol Visitor Center in D.C. after him. Prior to being elected to the House of Representatives, Barrett served in the South Carolina state legislature. Among other things, he proposed an amendment to the state constitution that would declare hunting a fundamental right. Another bill he sponsored would have required all public schools to display "In God We Trust" on an eleven by fourteen inch plaque in every classroom, auditorium and cafeteria.

Before we get too carried away in worrying about religious fundamentalist wingnuts in other countries, we might want to look at some of the ones in our own, ones who are elected officials. Hopefully Barrett's abhorrent, neo-fascist bill will never again see the light of day. That such a thing was even proposed is a disgrace to what America stands for.

Unfortunately pretty much everything Congress does is a disgrace to what America stands for. At least this particular disgrace hasn't got a single co-sponsor, which means it's not going anywhere. Although I wouldn't be too surprised if Robert Byrd (D-KKK) introduced a matching bill in the Senate.

It actually isn't fascist, though. That's just as well--fascism is so widespread in Washington that if it actually was fascist, it would probably have at least some support.

Interesting cheap shot at Byrd, who seems to be known today mostly for his fervent opposition to the Bush Administration and its endless wars, not for his racism. Unlike, say, Trent Lott. If you could resist this compulsion you seem to feel to bash Democrats whenever you get the chance, I would much appreciate it. Byrd is no saint, but I've seen no evidence that he would support anything like this.

Oh, and what word would you choose instead of "fascist" (or, "neo-fascist", the phrase I actually used)? Eliminationist ideas like that would be right at home in Nazi Germany in the 1930s. Just change the religion of the victims. We can nitpick over political labels or we can call it what it is, obscene.

On further thought, it occurs to me that the Feds still consider Iraq to be a "state sponsor of terrorism." Which means that if by some chance this bill actually did pass, Ahmad Chalabi and his henchmen would be barred from entering the US. That's a rather appealing idea. :-)

If you don't have anything serious to say, I'd appreciate it if you would move on to another comment thread. I'm pretty sure this will die in committee since, as you said it doesn't have any co-sponsors but just the fact that someone is proposing such a thing makes me sick.

Hmm...won't Karl Rove object to this as soon as he realizes it means losing Florida, as the Cuban exile community there would be sent back to the loving arms of Fidel Castro?

I wouldn't be surprised if this Barrett character had no real idea that Cuba is on the list. Unfortunately, democracy means that sometimes morons are elected. And people who think that mass exclusions and expulsions are morally acceptable.

What do you guys think of his other ideas? Especially the religious plaques in every student-used room of every public school. roll eyes
