probe of Muslims and the miliary expands again

Date: September 29, 2003 | 2 Shaban 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: news
The co-founder of the American Muslim Armed Forces and Veteran Affairs Council, Abdul Rahman al-Amoudi, was arrested on Sunday. He was taken into custody without an arrest warrant when he arrived in at Dulles International Airport on a flight from London. The arrest was made on "probable cause", according to the FBI, which means there are "exigent circumstances". The evidence supporting the arrest must be revealed at the suspect's preliminary court hearing.

Al-Amoudi has not been charged yet, although that too is expected at the preliminary court hearing later today. The FBI source said he was "unfamiliar" with the charges that would be brought.

Al-Amoudi had been investigated in 2002 on suspicions of terrorist financing but apparently nothing came of this and the current charges are said not to be related to the earlier investigation.

Sources: ABC News, Reuters

This just in: Amoudi has been charged with violating U.S. sanctions against Libya. He made trips to Libya that he did not report, and accepted $10,000 from the Libyan mission to the U.N. In August of this year he brought $340,000 from individuals in Libya with him to the U.K., but he was not charged with anything at that time. He had previously met with "White House officials" about gaining access to Libyan assets that had been frozen since the Lockerbie incident. He had said at that time that he wanted to "build bridges" between Libya and the United States. Amoudi is from Ethiopia (ABC News)

Added: Amoudi is also connected with several other Muslim American organizations, primarily the American Muslim Council.

UPDATE 9/30: And it continues. Now they've arrested another translator, a civilian physician named Ahmed Mehalba. He was arrested at Logan Airport after arriving on a flight from Cairo and allegedly had classified documents from Guantanamo in his possession. He has been charged with making false statements, apparently for denying that he had any classified documents in his possession (ABC News, Reuters)

Al-Jazeera adds some insight to this piece of info:
Al-Amoudi’s case is the latest example of a post 9/11 crackdown against members of Muslim organisations in the US.

His arrest follows repeated calls by pro-Israeli politicians, notably Democrat Senator Charles Schumer, for US authorities to be more vigilant towards Muslims with suspected links to political groups in the Middle East.

Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal reported a senior figure in the AMC had been held since June on suspicion of helping to finance groups regarded as international terrorists.

The business daily newspaper said an Egyptian AMC advisory board member, Soliman Biheiri, had been detained for suspected links to the opposition Muslim Brotherhood movement in Egypt.

"The case of Soliman Biheiri has become the spearhead of a two-year investigation into whether Islamic [sic] activists and their wealthy Saudi backers assembled an empire of dozens of well-funded businesses and charities in this country to support terrorists and their causes," the paper said.

Assalamu'alaikum Sis, I haven't been visiting here often lately, but MasyaAllah every visit is always worthwhile.

I've been reading news about this case as well as Capt. James Yee's, and to be honest I'm getting the feeling that somehow, it had started that being an American (as the Government wants it) is in conflict with being a Muslim, as in doing good to fellow Muslims, that is. I mean, these people have very good reputations and suddenly they're alleged spies (so to say)? Don't know about that, but I just see something very wrong there.

Of course my opinion is not strongly based, because all I ever known about the situation is read from the media. I myself am not an American and am not living in America. But how do you see this series of events?

Hope you understand what I mean... English isn't my first language ^_^;

Re: I'm getting the feeling that somehow, it had started that being an American (as the Government wants it) is in conflict with being a Muslim...
I don't live in the US either, tho' I am American. I visited The US in October of 2001 and it was like Bazaaro World. The places I expected to have a lot of fitnah were amazingly civil and the places I expected to be open minded and progressive were absolutely reactionary. My own step-mother ( a Christian) in Philadelphia asked me not to come to her house anymore. I worked for a few weeks at Wal-Mart in Lynchburg, VA. A man came to the store demanding that the Wal-Mart management make me remove my hijab. When the manager refused, he (the customer) asked, "If I wore my (Klu Klux Klan) robe, you wouldn't let me in the store, but you let these people wear their symbols. They are enemies to America!" The White Southern Christian manager had the security guard (who is Muslim) escort the man out of the store after telling him that he was no longer welcome there. Can you believe it? The US has changed since 9/11. They are still suffering from mass hysteria and the Bush administration is exploiting it.
