Muslim voices (short version) 3

Date: September 26, 2003 | 29 Rajab 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: muslim, blogs
Maryam looks at how ideas about religious pluralism can be reconciled with the conflicting truth claims of the various religions.

Arash shares his thoughts on the death of Edward Said.

alt.muslim looks at the latest battles over hijab.

Muslim Wake Up talks about progressive Islam.

Thebit discusses secularism, secularization, and Islam.

Ikram Saeed collects some statements from Muslim women about discrimination they or people they know have faced.

Zack Ajmal shares his thoughts about the Yee and Halabi espionage cases.

Ubaid asks somebody to explain to him how "removing" Arafat would help peace any. I'm baffled about this as well. If Arafat falls, Hamas is in. That doesn't sound like a step in the right direction.

Umar has a useful chart of who the U.S. is granting Iraq reconstruction contracts to.

Aziz Poonawalla has his own thoughts on Edward Said.

Wow, what a surprise to find I was quoted in Ikram Saeed's statement collection. I had to laugh at the one person who commented "It can't be that bad, can it?"

I was puzzled by the comment that stated "less analytical, more documentary, poignant for it's dispassionate" whatever, and that after reading it he was left "oddly diminished". Huh? I'm quite sure I wasn't looking to have that sort of effect...umm, whatever that effect was...I was just venting . And oh it felt good.

Update: there's a woman here on two years' probationary leave from her social worker job because she put on hijab. She is fighting it in the courts. She just may win...but with the legal system as it is here, she may be too old to need to wear hijab by then.

As I explained in the first of the new series (you can see that this post is number 3), I brought it back in a much shorter version, in which I only examine a shortlist of blogs. Anybody who isn't satisfied is more than welcome to do it themselves.

Zafira -- I hope you don't mind that I posted your comment on my blog. I thought it was very well written, and wanted to give it wider circulation. I will certainly take it down if you would prefer not to have it so public.
