things that make you go hmm

Date: September 22, 2003 | 25 Rajab 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: links
A couple of interesting reads today. First, via TalkLeft, Attorney General Ashcroft's memo directing all federal prosecutors to standardize their charging and prosecution - on the strictest possible charges.

Second, via Body and Soul, correspondence from voting system manufacturer Diebold concerning an apparent computer error that caused some 16,000 negative votes to be tallied for Gore in the 2000 election.

This is an example of why electronic voting machines are not all they're made out to be. I've worked in software quality assurance for years, and as a result of that experience there's no way I'd trust them.

Too bad that after the 2000 election the government chose to spend a pile of taxpayer money on new gadgets, instead of addressing the question of what to do when the vote is a tie. But then, politicians will always prefer to spend looted money over finding a real solution.

Absolutely. My county uses the Diebold AccuVote optical scan voting machines and the more I read about Diebold and it's problems, the more concerned I get. Instead of insuring the integrity of the vote, the changes since 2000 seem to have only made things worse.
