immigrant workers freedom ride rally

Date: September 21, 2003 | 24 Rajab 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: personal
On Saturday, I attended the Seattle send-off rally for the Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride. The turn-out was moderately good, but not tremendous. Local labor unions were well-represented and there were a variety of local activist groups, particularly socialists (I was given at least three different socialist newspapers). There were supporters of two presidential candidates visible there, Dean and Kucinich (disclosure: I did some leafleting for Kucinich).

The King County Executive, Ron Sims, was there, as was Rep. Jim McDermott. Five of the freedom riders spoke to tell their stories and there were good speeches about immigrant rights and justice. Plus it was a warm, sunny day, a bit unusual for Seattle in the fall. All in all, I had a good time, and I'm glad I went.
