learning about the interactions of Islam and Buddhism

Date: September 09, 2003 | 12 Rajab 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: history
Following up on my post yesterday about Islam in Tibet, I've been browsing an e-book called The Historical Interaction Between the Buddhist and Islamic Cultures Before the Mongol Empire. It is a fascinating read and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning more about Central Asian history.

The author has a large number of other materials on Islam in Central Asia at his site including the historical sketch of the Muslims of Tibet that I linked to yesterday. Beyond that he seems to have a vast collection of resources on Tibetan Buddhism.

I'm still in part one, but I've already learned a lot and I look forward to reading the rest.

My interest in this was sparked by the book I'm reading right now. It's a mystery novel called "The Skull Mantra" by Eliot Pattison. It really gives a look into Tibetan culture and the situation in Tibet today. The second book in the series, which I bought today, is set partly in Xinjiang.

I just had time to glance at this, but it looks interesting. Did you know the Barmakids were originally Buddhist?

Volume II of Andre Wink's Al-Hind: The Making of the Indo-Islamic World also covers Muslim-Buddhist relations in India, before Buddhism's final collapse there. I have to talk him up, because he was on my prelim committee
