virus swarm

Date: August 19, 2003 | 20 Jumada al-Akhir 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: consumer
As if the Blaster worm wasn't enough, now the Sobig.F virus is swarming across the internet. I've already received at least two dozen emails today.

When Sobig.F infects a computer, it uses the names in the Outlook or Outlook Express address book to send out copies of itself. Thus, the virus may appear to be from someone you know. However, the large (125 K) attachment and the vapid subject header give it away.

Do not open the attachment! It's better if you don't even open the email. Delete it as soon as you get it and clean out your Deleted Items folder right away.

Panda Software has information on Sobig.F including what subject headers and attachment file names to look for. They also have a web-based system that will scan your computer for the virus for free, and a virus cleaning application you can download and run if your computer is infected.

You should make use of these or similar utilities from other antivirus sites to do an emergency scan and removal. Then, if you do not already have antivirus software on your computer, get some! I use AVG Anti-Virus, which is freeware.

If you already have antivirus software, make sure that you have the latest antivirus files from the manufacturer. Any good antivirus firm should already have defenses up for Sobig.F (AVG does).
