Islamic dates now available for Movable Type

Date: August 06, 2003 | 7 Jumada al-Akhir 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: website, features
A huge shout-out to Zumaidi Zainuddin, who has written a plugin for Movable Type that gives the Islamic date for any given Gregorian date. Thanks to him, I can now display the Islamic date at the beginning of each day's blog entries. Jazakallah khayrun, brother Zumaidi!

Sorry to be Off Topic, but I was wondering if you could post on specific topic, or point me to a previous post you've written on this subject.

TalkLeft reported today that as part of the "Victory Act," Ashcroft would have the power to "Clamp down on Arab hawala transactions, where cash exchanged in an honor system has been funneled to terrorists."

What exactly are hawala transactions? What is this honor system?

If you don't know or aren't interested, sorry to have bothered you!

Inshallah, I'll post a blog entry about this with a bit more information. The short answer is that hawala is a banking system like any other; it is outside the formal banking system. Like any other banking system, it can be used for good purposes (the most common is immigrants sending money to their families back home) or bad. There is nothing inherently "evil" about hawala; however as an unofficial system, it may be more easily taken advantage of for money laundering than the formal banking system is. I haven't had a chance to read exactly what Ashcroft plans to do about hawala (which by the way is not specifically "Arab", it is used in a variety of other countries), but as I see it there are two different issues. First, there's cracking down on any banking system that is outside the formal banking system, whether the money is going to good purposes or bad. Second, there's cracking down on bad uses of the hawala system. The first is a financial regulation concern not an anti-terrorist concern. The second is an anti-terrorist concern.

I'll post up more details about hawala later on, inshallah.
