Muslims and ACLU mount legal challenge to Patriot Act

Date: July 31, 2003 | 30 Jumada al-Awwal 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: commentary, law
Several Muslim groups and organizations are suing the government on the grounds that part of the Patriot Act is unconstitutional. The ACLU is representing them. Thecomplaint (a legal document filed by the plaintiff in a civil suit setting out why they think they have been wronged) is available online (PDF).

I'm glad to see this underway. The Patriot Act was passed without much debate or discussion or even many people having read it. If nothing else, this lawsuit will hopefully allow for a thorough examination of the law, inshallah. I hope it will be repealed.

It's high time the act was given a serious challenge. Some small portions of the law might stand the test of time and worthiness, but far too much is given over to violating the Bill of Rights with illegal detentions, searches, and curtailment of speech.

Absolutely. I think that it should be repealed, and then the good parts, whatever they might be, can be re-enacted.
