follow-up on Palestinian non-violence movement

Date: July 18, 2003 | 18 Jumada al-Awwal 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: nonviolence
Awhile ago, I posted about whether a Palestinian non-violence movement would work. Jonathan Edelstein drew my attention to a recent article in The Jerusalem Times, an independent, weekly English-language Palestinian newspaper. The article looks at previous attempts by the Palestinians to employ non-violent tactics in their struggle, and the growing feeling among ordinary Palestinians that:

the use of arms in the intifada resulted in the destruction of all the Palestinian people's institutions, the re-occupation of its land, the destruction of its economy, and the unification of the Israelis behind a rightist leadership, while realizing that the objectives of the Palestinian extremist forces are the destruction of the Hebrew state; a war that is an extension of the 1948 war. After September 11, the killer of civilians, under any pretext, is a miniature Osama bin Laden.

The real commitment to nonviolence comes when you won't even attack a soldier carrying a gun, ready to shoot you.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Joel. What you are talking about is total pacifism. Many people, however, believe in not initiating force. That is, they will use violence if necessary to defend themselves (and only as much as is necessary to defend themselves) but will never start the violence nor use more violence than is necessary to defend themselves.

I see non-violence as a tactic in a just struggle that is to be preferred over violence, but I do not think that any large group of people will ever be able to attain your ideal of total pacifism nor is it realistic to expect them to do so.

Ghandi-ji would, I think, disagree with you. So would Martin Luther King.
