political survey of Arab-Americans

Date: July 15, 2003 | 15 Jumada al-Awwal 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: commentary
I'm too tired this evening to analyze this, but those who are interested may want to check out An Early Look at Arab Americans and the 2004 Elections, which reports on the results of a poll of Arab-Americans by Zogby International.

I don't know a lot about polling or statistics, but the sample of 500 people seems awfully small to me. Anybody have any knowledge about this?

A final note: Although most people identify Arabs with Islam, 77% of Arab-Americans are not Muslims, they're Christians (source). And only 25% of American Muslims are Arab by descent (source). Thus, although this survey provides some insight into the views of American Muslims, it should not be taken as representative of American Muslim views.

Most national polls use around 1000 people. That gives a margin of error of around 3%. With 500 people the margin of error increases to I think 4.5%.

Come to think of it, I actually don't know many Arab Muslims. In high school I had a friend who was Filipino Muslim, in college one who was Pakistani Muslim and another who was Bosnian Muslim, and now I'm living with an African American Muslim.

Where are all the Arab Muslims? Am I not cool enough for them? (Probable.)

Most of the Muslims in my area are either Somali or South Asian although there was a Syrian guy whom I used to see at the bus stop last year.

Zack, thanks for the info on poll samples. Even 1000 people to represent the 250 million plus Americans seems ridiculously small. But then, what do I know?
