the job-seeker's lament

Date: July 13, 2003 | 13 Jumada al-Awwal 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: career, paralegal
It seems strange, but summer quarter is almost half over. That means that I've got to move into high gear on searching for a full-time job so that I can get employed after I graduate. Now I remember why I like being a student so much!

From everything I've heard, the legal job market here is pretty flat. Other paralegal students have been having trouble even getting unpaid internships, much less full-time salaried positions. Those that have completed the program and managed to find employment are often taking a lower-level position such as file clerk and hoping to move up into a paralegal position when one becomes open.

I was looking for a job in the high tech field when the high tech economy first went into a nose-dive a couple of years ago. It was not fun. I sent out hundreds of resumes and went on around forty interviews. Almost every single time they would tell me that they got 500 or 1000 applicants for the same position. Just when it looked like things were getting better, another big dot.com would go under and leave a couple hundred more people looking for the same jobs I was trying to get. That was definitely not one of the happier periods in my life!

Hopefully my new job search won't be that bad, inshallah. There aren't a lot of positions out there at the moment that I'm qualified for; many of them want five or more years paralegal experience. It's the old conundrum. You can't get a job without experience, and you can't get experience without a job. My mom likes to joke about how companies want a person with ten years of experience and an advanced degree, who is willing to work for $15,000 a year.

Besides the paralegal positions that I'm looking at, I've also applied for a position in a major law firm's law library. I'm one of those people who thinks that spending all day doing legal research is a fun occupation and if I can get paid for it, even better.

Inshallah khayr.

I hear you, Al-m. I was in the belly of the beast of internet companies 2 years ago, and I threw it all away to work with nonprofits. Now, it's high time for a career change - to either library school or sound engineering. I don't think tech companies will be hiring for at least the next 8-9 mos or so (I am in SF), so I figure I'll get into something that is at least as bad as IT but also at least something I would like to do. Slim pickin's out there these days.

All the best with your job search. smile I'm still studying, and I wish it would go on and on because the real world doesn't sound good right now.

Best of luck to you in your job search. At this time, definitely think creatively and cast your net wide... check out the opportunities in academia and government as well as the private sector. Look into nonprofits, too.

Thanks for sharing your experiences and advice, everyone. When will this economy start to get better?

I have just recently gotten out of your boat, i.e., found a job that I hope will be permanent. I do think the economy is improving. You will never find this out by looking at the newspapers who, editorially, all want things to suck so that the Demoract party can re-take the reins of pwer. You will find this out by reading all the ads very frequently. Their number is increasing but, like with all recoveries, they are increasing slooooowly. I think you are about 30 or so? and so you may not have a clear memory of previous recessions. The recovery is always slow to take off and here, with all the Boeing problems, it's slower than in the rest of the country. But based on my job hunt, it is improving. It's moving like a slug: ever so slowly but it's moving.

I hope you are ignoring the requests for years of experience when you respond to ads and applying for any and every opening you can find. Also, I trust you are using whatever connetions you made with professors who have connections with those in positions to hire bodies. Right now, it doesn't matter what kind of job you get; it matters that you get a job, as I'm sure you know. Once you have a job, you can start looking for the ideal one. It's a sad state of affairs but I have learned the hard way that employers are not loyal to their employees any more so I don't think employees who more loyalty than is necessary to do the job, i.e., if you are working in the law, you must respect confidentiality, but the bosses will fire you as soon as look at you any more.

Sorry to go on for so long but, in spite of the countless ways I disagree with you about almost everything, being jobless sucks and I hope it is over for you soon.

Here is a job I found when searching for insurance jobs:

link

It's a paralgel with State Farm and yes, they ask for 3-5 years experience, but no sane person wants to work in insurance so they might be more flexible. I trust that before you apply for a job, you are (1) making an individualized resume for each firm youare applying to, emphasizing the appropriate skills and knowledge and (2) if you get an interview, studky on the appropriate subject. I can advise you that if you get an interview for an insurance related fposition, go the web site of a firm called Reed McClure and read something called "The Washington Insurance Law Letter"

It's bed-time so I have to go. Good luck. I hope you find something very soon.

Thanks, Carol. I'll take a look at the insurance position. And yes, I am doing all the things that you suggested.

BTW, my lament that the economy is still bad isn't based so much on the media, but mostly on discussions with people that I meet and work with or go to school with (even my parents, who are staunch Republicans, feel that way; they don't believe that there is some sort of liberal conspiracy involved. But whatever floats your boat).
