random notes about school

Date: June 20, 2003 | 19 Rabi al-Akhir 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: school, paralegal
Grades came out for spring quarter. I got a 4.0 grade point average. I've gotten a 4.0 in all of my classes but one; in that class the highest grade the instructor gave was about a 3.6, which I got.

Summer quarter starts on Monday. I'll be taking Principles of Microeconomics and doing my internship. With the class, commute time, and the internship, I'll busy pretty much full-time Monday through Thursday so posting to the blog will probably be relatively light on those days.

I went to purchase my textbooks today only to discover that the student services building had closed at 1 p.m. What on earth possessed them to close so early the Friday before classes start? I wasn't the only frustrated student gaping at the locked-up building. However, the building will be open for four hours tomorrow so I'm going to try again to get my books, inshallah.

Economics isn't a class I need to take for my paralegal certificate, but I've taken all of those and I need to have a full-time credit load for my financial aid, so I decided to take economics. It's a subject I don't know a lot about and feel that I ought to, so that I can better understand what's going on.

Economics is certainly an interesting field. I've mentioned a few times over on my blog that it's something of a hobby of mine.

If you have any questions or need help with some of the concepts, feel free to ask me. Altho with your grades, something tells me you won't need much help.

masha'Allah at your grades, sister! May you have the imaan to study for Allah's sake, and may He constantly increase your knowledge. Ameen. =)

Hi there from one of your fellow paralegal students! I saw your name referenced in an MSN article, which linked to your blogs. Really interesting! I always wanted to get to know you more, but we are so rushed at school. I'l probably see you in the internship seminar this summer, as I am doing my internship this summer too.

Congratulations on the excellent grades!

I majored in econ so I'm a little biased, but I definitely agree that it's a subject worth studying in order to know what's going on. Most journalists don't, so you'll see headlines like "biggest tax hike in U.S. history" without any mention of things like inflation or rising GDP, and it's easier to be taken in if you don't have some background in economics.

My roommate is taking macroeconomics for the first time, and she came back from her class on fiscal policy absolutely raging at the mess that has been made of Keynesianism.

I think that just a basic understanding of math and a natural skepticism can help a person deal with misleading statistics. One example that I remember had to do with the percentage of registered voters who register. In my state they have something called "Motor Voter" where you can register to vote while renewing your driver's license. The number of registered voters has increased. But if the same number of people vote as before, the percentage of registered voters who vote will go down. I think that fewer people are voting, but that statistic isn't a very good way of judging it.

A basic understanding of math will go a long way, but there are a few concepts (like constant dollars) that aren't really intuitive, and you really need to understand them if you want to look at historical trends. Any time you compare a current policy move to an older policy move, without using constant dollars, you're completely skewing the numbers to make the current policy look bigger - either purposefully, or out of a lack of understanding of econcomics. Either way, it's bad.
