Asperger's syndrome and other 'hidden' illnesses

Date: June 16, 2003 | 15 Rabi al-Akhir 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: personal, health
Natasha describes her experiences growing up with Asperger's Syndrome.

As I first read about Asperger's, I thought that a lot of it sounded like the normal quirks (mental and physical) that people have, just to a greater extent. That's probably how many people like Natasha can go for many years without a proper diagnosis. And I think that people can be skeptical about Asperger's for this reason. But the real point is: if you or your kid is not feeling well or is "quirky" enough that it affects their interactions with others, it's something you need to be concerned about. It may turn out that there's a physical cause for this (Asperger's) and it may turn out that there are things you can do to help yourself or your kid.

On an unrelated note, I have a condition called hypothyroidism. So do my mom and my two maternal aunts. My mom and my aunts weren't diagnosed until middle age because their symptoms were relatively mild and easily written off. Fatigue, weight gain, depression. Don't we all suffer from those? However, my hypothyroidism is somewhat more severe and it became obvious when I was twelve and thirteen that the changes that were supposed to be happening as I went through puberty weren't. Fortunately, my doctor diagnosed what the problem was and prescribed the medication I need for normal development and to be healthy.

She also recommended that the women in my family be tested for low thyroid levels and sure enough my mom and her two sisters had it. Like I said, they got along fine all their lives. But a medication that costs about $3 a month has made a significant difference in their well-being.

The moral of the story is, again, don't write it off if you're chronically not feeling well. There may be something your doctor can do for you.

Hypothyroidism runs in my family too. Alhamdulillah, us younger ones were diagnosed right away, but the generation before me lived with it for a long time.

Indeed, the more closely you look at all the 'normal' people, the more variations and differences you find. And yet, most of the time we all muddle through okay. Which is unfortunate when someone ends up enduring correctible difficulties for longer than they should, but says something important about our ability to just get on with life.

On a semi-related note, I saw the film 'Frida' last night, and was reminded again that I'm very far from being one of the most put upon people on the planet. But still, when we talk about these issues, I think it encourages other people to look into taking steps that might improve their quality of life.

as-salaam alaykum!
I am quite new to the internet and very new to this 'blogging' business. I am originally from Iraq and AL-HAMDULLILAH I suffer from a diabling neurological disorder (wobbly legs!). I was fascinated to read Sarah's story but gutted to go to her site and see her advertising contraceptive 'quickies'. I just thought how lost Mr. and Mrs. Kafir are without Islam and our belief in Qadaa' and Qadr (fate and destiny). In the hospital I have used the opportunity (as is our duty so I ask for no medals!) to offer some rather ill people Islam. They suffer so terribly and surely they perceive their weaknesses as humans and the need for a Creator. They get so introspective as with all kafir and fail to notice Allah's signs all around (like the rising sun or the intricacies of the human body). I would just advise that it is not a great idea to refer people to her fast contraceptive site!

What are you talking about? I have not linked to any site by a person named Sarah nor to any "fast contraceptive site".

Contraception is halal in Islam where sex is halal (inside marriage). I guess you're assuming that if non-married people come across information on contraception, they'll decide to have sex when they wouldn't before. I find that unlikely, but Allah SWT knows best.

That I link to a site does not mean that I agree with everything that's written at that site. I linked to a specific article in which Natasha talks about an illness that she suffers, not to the page on contraceptives.

If you find Natasha's site morally objectionable, then you do not have to visit it. If you find my site morally objectionable because I link to sites that might somewhere have information that might not be Islamic (although as I said, that's debatable), then you can stop visiting my site. No one is forcing you to do so.

as-salaam alaykum,
You are right on so many points. True contraception is mubah (permissible) but this woman was pushing 'emergency' contraception, sorry 'cos I got wrong name (Natasha not Sarah), and I was ridiculously flippant to suggest cutting out sites which are objectionable 'cos that would cut out most of the web!
Your attitude is a tad abrasive but I am getting used to this style of westerners (I reside in London). I was just trying to point to a window of opportunity of giving da'wah but it seems I expressed my self too poorly.
Peace upon you!

Yes, you are correct that my attitude was abrasive. I tend to respond in kind and I take poorly to people who come to my blog and start out with an attack. You can choose to think of this as a problem with "Westerners" if you want, but I think you will find that if you are pleasant to people, they will be pleasant back to you. A better approach on your part would have gotten a better response from me.

Natasha has been very open to learning more about Islam from my blog. She has even linked to me from her own blog so that her readers can learn more about Islam too. You say that you are eager to bring people to Islam, so I hope you will respect my own da'wah efforts.

If you have additional comments you wish to make about Natasha or her site, please make them at her blog rather than posting about her here.

I have browsed some of your postings and i am starting to get aquainted with many of your viewpoints. I read Shaykh al-Munajjid's opinion about the destination of the Kaafir. That has severe implications for those who are offered Islam and reject it. Let's pray Allah Guides Natasha!
However, Surat al-Bayinah is quite explicit that ahli kitaab and Mushrikeen will reside in hell forever. This is embellished by hadith. Also, we will be questioned as an Ummah about whether we represented Islam in it's entirety with the Shariah fully in place - that is the true da'wah to Islam, though of course it is imperative that we always call for Islam to others in the absence of a State.
To be abrasive for the Truth is sometimes what is needed. The Noble Prophet was so kind but sometimes so harsh SAW. All depends on the circumstances.
as-salaam alaykum wa Allah yahdeunaa!

Look, you want to give da'wah to Natasha in your own way, go to her blog and give it to her. As for me, I'll continue to provide information about Islam for her and others to read, in my way. It is Allah SWT alone who knows what is in her heart. I don't understand why you are spending so much time at my blog talking about her. She has a comments section at her site. Use it.
