east of the sun, west of the moon

Date: June 04, 2003 | 3 Rabi al-Akhir 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: islam, blacks
East of the Sun (West of the Moon): Islam, the Ahmadis, and African America is a fascinating article.

Ahmadis are a religious movement that grew out of Islam in India. Like the Nation of Islam, Ahmadiyya's founder claimed to be a new prophet from God. Both groups also have theologies that most Muslims consider heretical. "Heretical" is a judgmental term; nonetheless, the belief systems of both groups diverge significantly from orthodox Islam and should not be confused with it.

The article "East of the Sun" talks about Ahmadi missionizing in America in the 1920s and 1930s and its success among African-Americans. I had not heard of this before, but came across the article while researching the history of Islam among African-Americans. As the article itself argues, it gives a new perspective on what Islam has meant and continues to mean for blacks in America.

salam...very interesting..i've never heard of this before either..after a quick skim of the article, it appears that the first converts to islam in america were actually ahmadiyas.....i'm surprised that this is not more common or that ahmaddiya movement is not more widely spread in america because of this...they still seem to be on the dl mostly

This is a little off-topic, but I've heard that Sikhism developed in India as a kind of merging of Islam and Hinduism. Do you know if this is true?

PG: I have heard that as well, but haven't really looked into the history of Sikhism.

I too have heard that but like Zack I haven't studied Sikhism at all.

I think its cool that Ahmediyyas showed up in NA so early. And so improbable that the Ahmediyyas are the antecedents of the nation of Islam and all that jazz.
