who owns the billboards?

Date: May 16, 2003 | 14 Rabi al-Awwal 1424 Hijriah
Media deregulation is a hot topic on many blogs1 lately. A lot of attention has focused on a company called Clear Channel. Radio was deregulated in 1996 (thanks a lot, Bill Clinton! mad ) and Clear Channel was the major beneficiary. Opponents of media deregulation don't want to see the same thing happen in TV, newspapers and other media.

I don't listen much to the radio, but after hearing the fuss about Clear Channel in recent months I started noticing that a large percentage of the billboards in my area have the Clear Channel logo on them. It turns out that Clear Channel Outdoor (see also this site) owns over 700,000 outdoor displays (it claims to be able to reach half the adults in America and 75% of the Hispanic population) and claims 22% of total US outdoor advertising revenues. Some useful background information is available here.

Who would think to pay attention to who owns the billboards? It makes me wonder what else is going on that no one is paying attention to.

Anyway, if you decide you want to do something about media deregulation, check out Media Reform Network.

This is a real threat to free speech as corporate media is truly cut loose. I listen to KPFK 90.7 FM LA, the ONLY independent station which tells it like it is. Amy Goodman's Democracy Now! is a slap in the face of what passes for news nowadays.
This latest mess ofcourse has nothing to do with the fact Michael Powell, son of the jackass Colin, is the head of the FCC.

The Salon series by Eric Boehlert about Clear Channel is well worth reading.

Clear Channel's ownership by a man with close ties to the Bush family, a major donor to Republican campaigns, plus its control of radio and bilboards (and possibly Spanish TV soon, as well) means that it will be a force impeding liberal access to media.

Clear Channel-owned bilboards refused to carry anti-war messages, and Clear Channel-owned radio stations sponsored pro-war rallies.
