looking back on a better past

Date: May 11, 2003 | 9 Rabi al-Awwal 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: history
Medieval Spain: Arabs & Jews in Cultural Embrace, by Richard Silverstein, is an article about the music of Sephardic Jews. Silverstein also provides some background on the history of Jews in Arab lands. Especially poignant are his introduction and conclusion:

In this venomous age of Arab-Jewish hatred, it is easy to forget that there once was another age in which Jews and Arabs lived shoulder to shoulder in cultural, political & social harmony. During the Golden Age in medieval Spain, Jews played prominent roles in politics, art, commerce and all major areas of social discourse side by side with their Muslim brethren. Jews and Muslims did not hate each others religion. On the contrary, their respective theologians learned from each other & used the wisdom learned to enrich their own religions discourse... ...As I listen to this glorious music, I tell myself: Do not despair. The current hatred and violence cannot long prevail. Mutual respect between the adherents of these two great faiths does not have to be long in coming if both would only remember and honor their own history.
Silverstein lives in the Seattle area and has a blog. I found his site through a directory of Seattle weblogs. He also has a deeply personal article about child abuse.

Just curious to see if my vowels get posted or not. Interesting form of censorship you seem to have going here.

I say, that's the risk one takes if one chooses to troll. Al-M's actually very accomodating.

Well, Laura, you have a very interesting definition of both "accomodating" and "troll." As far as I can tell, Diana was simply trying to point out some of the serious fallacies in Mr. Silverstein's fantasy interpretation of history. Obviously, our host isn't interested. Instead, she tries to make her critics look silly and only succeeds in revealing her own intolerance. That's fine. You all can sit here and talk to yourselves now and avoid the intrusion of any facts that might contradict your fairy tale version of reality. Meanwhile, in Riyadh, reality intrudes big time.

As well I should. I was here for it, in another thread. Perhaps you missed it.

Meanwhile, in Riyadh, reality intrudes big time. Reality intrudes in Riyadh, in Baghdad, in Bhopal, in Hebron, in Bunia, in Bogota, lots of places.

Look, I don't go to other peoples' blogs and insult them and call them liars. I don't appreciate being treated that way on my own blog.

I think of a blog as being like a person's house. Don't act there like you wouldn't if you were invited over to someone's house. And if you go ahead and be rude and insulting, don't complain if you get booted.

Oh, and in regard to Riyadh, how many times do I have to repeat myself what I think of terrorism? Nonetheless, for people who have a really short attention span: those who kill civilians will face the wrath of God. They are to Him as though they killed all of humankind. Is that clear enough?

I think if you read the comments to the Rodney King post, you would understand the reasons for the disemvowelment.

An interesting discussion on the Rodney King beating and trial was pretty much ruined by some entirely off-topic comments. The initiators were, unfortunately, Roach and Diane. The disemvowelment was, given the rude behavour, justified. (If there was ever a good reason to be banned from commenting, rudeness is it.)

Good discussion on blogs, like discussion anywhere on the net, is extremely vulnerable to those who wish to grandstand, not learn. And I don't think Diane and Roach really, at the bottom of it, want to grandstand. I expect they were just so eager to grapple with some tough questions, and couldn't wait for the appropriate posting to make a comment.

I appreciate the interest Diane and Roach have about Islam, and I think honest inquiries and reasoned debate are wonderful things. If Diane and Roach have further questions (Adn I,m sure they do), one way to answer them, and to engage in debate, is via e-mail. Roach, Diane, I think you should feel free to send out a cc-ed emails, and those who wish to can continue the conversation.

Lynn B, you can feel free to e-mail me as well. My knowledge is limieted, but sharing perspectives, in itself, can broaden viewpoints. Blogging is such a vain and silly activity that its not worth any negative feelings or ill-will.
