Muslim voices 5/3 to 5/10

Date: May 10, 2003 | 8 Rabi al-Awwal 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: muslim, blogs
Here's this week's round-up of what Muslim bloggers are talking about.

First, here are the blogs that have working permalinks. You'll go right to the blog entry I'm talking about, inshallah.

Sadia Salam posts information about a style of art called fauvism.

Karen Hanson talks about sewing an abaya for herself. An abaya is a large cloak-like outergarment. My mom and I have made two abayas for me and I can sympathize with sister Karen's frustrations. It's not as easy as it looks at first!

Aizuddin Danian posts about "democracy-lite" in Malaysia.

Fazal Majid reviews "Holy War: The Crusades and Their Impact on Today's World" by Karen Armstrong. I read about half this book a number of years ago. It was very interesting and I learned a lot. It's a very long book, however, and I wasn't able to finish it before the library wouldn't let me check it out anymore.

Saadat tells us about his "hiding place" on campus and the interesting plants and animals he and his friends observe there.

Khushee plays around with answers to the question: what is life?

Umair Salam's articles blog has up a list of books every Muslim should read.

Umar posts up an article about Gulf War Syndrome and depleted uranium.

Now, here are the Blogger blogs. When you get to the blog, you'll have to scroll down and look for the entry I've referenced. Will Blogger ever work right?

Sara Mahmud shares a lot of good Islamic information including commentary on Quran 19:64-65, some hadiths, a du'a (prayer), and some inspirational stories (all on May 6)

Bin Gregory posts (May 5) about the upcoming holiday for the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This is not an "official" Islamic religious holiday but is widely celebrated.

After the recent deaths of her friend's grandmother and her mother's aunt, dawn2dusk is thinking about life, death, and the Hereafter (May 8).

Nazim Syed posts a moving story about doing things to make others happy (May 6).

Tora looks back on his experiences at college as he prepares to graduate (May 5).

Muhammad Ali Khan reports on a shooting that took place at the campus where he went to business school (May 10). It seems like these shooting incidents are becoming more and more common in America.

Hafsa Ahsan wrote an article about blogging that was published in a newspaper! Way to go, sis Hafsa! You rock! Post is on May 10.

Dita, who lives in Singapore, posts a link to an Islamic ruling about highly contagious diseases (like SARS) and quarantines (entry of May 7).

Zahra talks about post-colonial studies (May 6).

Arshe posts a link to a page about Multi-Faith Mysticism: A Spiritual Journey Through Spain, a travel package to Spain (entry of May 8).

Jabir posts an interesting Quran verse and hadith about how animals worship God in their own way (May 8).

SASAN talks about the science of sexual attraction and orientation, based on discussions from a college class (May 10).

Shi'a Pundit discusses proof and faith (May 7).

Seher shares the lyrics to an Islamic rap song. Just as there is Christian music for Christians who want to listen to an uplifting message so there is also Islamic music. You can check out links to a variety of different types of Islamic music at my Islamic Music page.

Speaking of Islamic music, Amina has some streaming audio that plays as soon as you load her blog in your browser. I don't understand the words but I found it peaceful and lovely music. While you're at Amina's blog you can also read a story about the value of repentance (May 10).

Raeesa shares a poem she wrote about the victims of war (May 8).

Sheshe has a lot to say about the refugees of Afghanistan and why she feels the U.S. is not doing enough to help rebuild that country (May 7).

Hafsa Ahsan in her articles blog shares an article she found called "What's Wrong With the Arab World?" which responds to another article that blames Islam (May 8).

Sufistic posts about the people of this world and the people of the next (May 5).

Thebit calls shame on suicide bombers who kill civilians (May 4).

Ikram Saeed posts a short snippet from an article about anti-Palestinian sentiment among Iraqis (May 8). Be sure to also read the comments on this entry for Ikram's discussion with Jonathan Edelstein about rights of return for refugees.

Ubaid is planning to travel outside the U.S. and writes about his worries that he might be questioned or detained during a visit to the INS to get his papers in order (May 7).

Aziz Poonawalla explains what the word "madrasa" (Islamic school) means and the wide variety of madrasas that exist (May 8).

A-M: Just a minor quibble. Shouldn't it be 5/3 to 5/10 in the title?

I think the Head Heeb has hit upon the only way to ensure permalinks on blospot sites work properly: after each spurt of blogging, go to archives and republish. Then go to "settings," hit "save changes," and then hit "publish." That has been working for me, at least, although I'm taking a semi-holiday from the blogosphere so I can study for the June 9th LSAT.
