the prison industrial complex

Date: April 29, 2003 | 26 Safar 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: links
As a follow-up to my last post about the war on drugs and to some of the issues that have been discussed in the comments section, here is an excellent article from Atlantic Monthly I found that looks at what it calls the Prison Industrial Complex. The article is from 1998 so the statistics it provides are out of date. But it gives a good overview of the history and current status of America's prison system, what the war on drugs has done to the prison population, and the racial issues involved. The article is quite long, continuing on in three parts, but I think it's worth the time to read if you are interested in learning more about these issues.

asalamu alaykum,
well I used to listen to rap and some of the stuff my older bro listened too. I used to listen to 2pac. He said: "instead of war on poverty, they got a war on drugs so the police can bother me." and "I ain't ever did a thing I didn't have to do", and "don't let 'em jack you up, crack you up, and pimp smack you up" when talking about the cops, talking about the cops..stuff like that.

I'm posting to thank you for recommending that "The Vision of Islam" book, I may read it. I read a tiny bit on amazon.com and it looks like a nice flowing read and informative. asalamu alaykum, john

There was a class at UC Santa Cruz by that name that quite a few people took and most thought it was really interesting. It was taught by Angela Davis and she raised some really interesting points.

I'll definitely check this article out. I think the American prison system is basically a reconstitution of slavery. I'm surprised more people don't simply call it a racial gulag system.

I have a new post up that addresses a couple of these issues and explores some more. I'm also continuing to bookmark articles about the prison industrial complex in America. I think both of you have a point.
