'the male is not like the female'

Date: April 12, 2003 | 9 Safar 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: feminism
In Boys will be Boys - Gender identity issues, Abdul Hakim Murad takes an extended look at scientific evidence suggesting that there are innate reasons why men and women "tend towards different concerns and spheres of activity" and how this accords with Islamic views about men and women.

What does he mean by "This is why the contemporary Muslim interpretation of shari‘a in ways which diminish haqiqa is so often accompanied by a diminished respect for women. The sexes are only regarded with equivalent esteem when batin and zahir are spoken of with equal frequency by believers"? I'm not familiar with the terms haqiqa, batin, and zahir.

Haqiqa is Truth. Batin refers to inner or esoteric things. Zahir refers to outer or literal things. So the author is saying that when people don't seek for the inner meaning or truth but only go with the literal texts, they tend to devalue women. However, when they respect deeper meanings and inner truths, then they have more respect for women.

I often feel that way about the Bible as well; people who look at the inner meaning come up with readings that value women more than those of people who only look at the literal meaning.
