a picture, and a prayer

Date: April 09, 2003 | 6 Safar 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: mosques, art
I've always thought this was one of the more intriguing examples of Islamic architecture. It's part of a mosque in Samarra, Iraq. Click on the image to view a full-size (and large) picture in a pop-up window.

May the Iraqi people soon enjoy the peace and the security to begin creating things of beauty like this (and of every other kind) again.

Ameeeeeen!!!! I wonder how you get in that masjid. Think you got to climb all the way to the top? And they have levels all the way up? Very cool, I'd like to go there one day Inshalllah.

Assalamualaikum, That picture shows only part of the mosque complex. The Great Mosque of Samarra really looks like a fortress now. Its prayer hall has high wall, but the flat, wood-framed roof is now gone. The spiral minaret you see in the picture is located to the north and is known as the Malwiya, translated as snail-shell, rises to about 55 metres above the mosque. the same Caliph who built this mosque constructed another similar Malwiya for another big mosque in the same area. This smaller version is known as the Abu Dulaf Mosque.

The mu'azzin used to climb the spiral ramp of the minaret, whose brick mass dominated this ninth-century Abbasid capital. The view must be stupendous from here. I had plan to go to Iraq this summer to visit these stunning monuments but the war destroyed this plan too!!

[I will recommend Henri Stierlin's ISLAM: FROM BAGHDAD TO CORDOBA. It is comprehensive enough for those not taking architecture (like me) as a subject]

Can't resist scoring a few points on the people you don't agree with, can you? I have stated my views many times to you and made it clear what I am for and what I am against. You are free to go back and read my comments again if you don't remember them clearly. Otherwise I would appreciate it if you would refrain from making such hateful comments about me.

Driver, so far every comment that you have posted seems to be filled with personal attacks on other commentors. I welcome debate here, but I ask that it be conducted as much as possible in a polite manner. Criticize the ideas, not the person.

Right now, you are walking the line of being banned. Not because of your views but because of the way that you express them. If you want a place where you can say whatever you want in whatever words you want, I recommend that you get your own blog. When you are a visitor on my blog, I ask that you abide by my rules.

If you continue to post comments that use abusive language towards others, they will be deleted and your IP address will be banned.

Driver, you can continue to post, but as long as you keep arguing with me, your posts are going to come out looking a bit funny. You want to spout off as you choose, get your own blog. You want to post here, you follow my rules. Posts containing personal attacks on others will be deleted outright.

I saw the same photo on the bbc website in the history section. They have several articals on The Land of The Two Rivers ( Iraq) The authers fears of the then impending war have sadly come true. There is also an interesting look at the Islam/Westernees conflict. Question. How can I post photo's here?.

Robert - I'd appreciate it if you would post a link to the page on which the photo appears, rather than including the photo itself in your comments. If you include the photo, it will make the page much slower to load. Thanks smile

Ken, will you PLEASE read what I've written elsewhere in my blog and in my comments section? That's what I asked before, and you give no sign of having done it. You keep repeating over and over that I must not want the Iraqi people to be free. I have never said that, in fact I have said the opposite. I have set out in clear language what concerns I have with the war. Either you have not understood anything that I've written, or you are deliberately misrepresenting my views. That's what I'm upset about. You would be upset too if somebody kept implying that you hold views you have expressly rejected and kept misrepresenting your position.

I think Ken/Len whatever needs to collect his thoughs and sort them a little.
People like that can't speak for two sentences without contradicting themselves. First he says he is not Anti Moslem, and then he indirectly saids all moslems are stupid. ("how can any intelligent blah blah")
Dude, you need to chill out, and get rid of your prejudice.
Take a good look at the Qur'an, the Bible, Torah, and other religious writings. You will find that these messages harmonize.
I personally find the Qur'an to be the most clear and easily readable. I admit, that when I first started reading it, I was loathsome towards it, because of my westen brainwashing.
But I cried tears of joy because of it later, and I converted from Christianity to Islam. It seems strange to many probably, but it's only because many seem to get hung up on one prophet of God, and somehow fail to see that all the prophets of God have one harmonizing message. So there's this fight about which prophet is the better etc, God vs Allah, which is again quite foolish, since there is no conflict between the two. They are the same, and the messages is in harmony.
Now, questioning my intelligence you can, but I see more reasons to question yours. I don't want to seem like I'm showing off here, but I have done some things in my life, which has by many earned me reputation of "genious", "guru" and similar terms. I myself do not feel superior to other because of this though. I reckonize that people have been given different abilities by God, and that we are all needed. Should I feel superior to those who wash my clothers? Without them I would be a filthy man. Should I feel superior to the ant in the ground? What would I benefit from that? ...

An essential part of Islam, is egodeath, and rebirth. How can you think Islam is about superiority?
Ken, ask yourself, do you yourself feel superior over Muslims?
I myself think you sound extremely arrogant, and much like the false image you have of muslims.
Please realize that muslims are not terrorists. Those who are terrorists and claim to be muslim, have a very distorted view of Islam, much like you do.
Also, you claim you are against murder, but still support the war....

Now, if everyone just supported God, and followed his rules, we'd be allrite.

Ken, there is one simple rule that I ask all visitors to my blog to follow when they post comments and that is that they are polite and do not make derogatory remarks about others. I have requested several times for you to abide by this rule. I am sorry that you find yourself unable to do so.

As long as you continue to argue with me and to insult me, your comments will be displayed in an unintelligible format. This is so that my other visitors are not troubled by having to read them.
