an excellent website on Islam

Date: April 05, 2003 | 2 Safar 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: links, muslim
I've just spent the last couple of hours exploring the website of Mohammad Farooq. He has quite a wide variety of writings at his site, both articles and poetry. Some of his writings are addressed to non-Muslims to clarify issues relating to Islam; many are directed to Muslims and call for a reform of the sad state that the Muslim world is in today. He takes a particular interest in women's rights and has a whole section of articles about it. One of these, about women scholars in history (called "They Must Bloom Again"), I had previously republished with his permission on my own site. I was glad to take this opportunity to look at more of his writings. There is even an article calling for A Marxists-Muslims Dialog. Oh, and don't forget to check out the Hadith Humor Collection, an attempt to show that being religious doesn't mean giving up your sense of humor.

Note: Thanks to brother Khan for reminding me that you should also check out the section on the 1971 genocide in Bangladesh committed by Pakistan.

Note 2: On a lighter note, as a follow-up to the Marxists-Muslims dialog proposed by Farooq, here's a website that calls for a dialog between Greens and Muslims.

Khan, since you mention the Bangladesh war, do you have any book recommendations about the events leading up to the "army action" by the West Pakistanis and the 1971 war? I need something comprehensive, dispassionate and fair. Let's something along the lines of Righteous Victims by Benny Morris (about the Israeli-Arab conflict). I have read a couple of books by Pakistani authors and I didn't especially like them. Sorry for the off-topic comment.

Sorry, I don't know any book in English which I can recommend to you about 1971 war.

I found this from the website of Brother Omar Farooq which may interest you. He also has list of books about genocide in his site.

I am also sorry for off topic comments. I just could not resist to share the link about the most tragic event in the history of Bangladesh, when Brother Omar Farooq's website is mentioned here.

Brother Khan - No, these comments are not off-topic at all. I should have mentioned the genocide section in my original blog entry, but I was more focused on the Islam articles. I've added a note about the genocide section now. Thanks for the reminder.
