A longtime vegetarian, I look forward to reading the article on animal rights and Islam with much anticipation.
Islam does not require vegetarianism. However, there are some Muslims who are advocating for it as the best and most moral choice today. See Islamic Concern for one example.
Some Muslims in the West also eat vegetarian because of the difficulty in some places of finding food that meets Islamic dietary laws (which are similar in many respects to Jewish kosher laws). It's also the best option if eating with non-Muslims, i.e., order a vegetarian dish. I tend to do this myself.
I think the debate is over what responsible dominion would be. Do we have a responsibility to maximize the earth's welfare as a benefit just for humans, or is there a measure of the earth's welfare independent of benefit to humans?
For example, should we go toward more genetically modified food, to increase the yields and reliability of crops? Or should we avoid molecular interference with what God has created?
