the beauty of Islamic architecture

Date: March 24, 2003 | 19 Muharram 1424 Hijriah
Subjects: mosques, art
Along with calligraphy, another of the major Islamic arts is architecture. The beauty of some mosques is breath-taking. Below are three pictures. Click on each thumbnail image to view a full-size picture in a pop-up window.

The image to the left is of an arch over the main entrance of a mosque. The picture also illustrates the ornate decorative carving that many mosques feature. The image in the middle is the exterior of a mosque. Here we see beautiful painted inscriptions. I can only imagine the time and care that went into this. The image on the right shows the interior of a mosque. Because of the motions of the Islamic prayer, including bowing and prostrating, mosques do not have pews or chairs or other furniture for sitting. When you sit, you do so on the floor. Any mosque's interior design must balance out the large empty spaces this produces and create an organic whole that is pleasing to the eye.

There are many fantastic pictures online showing the beauties of Islamic architecture. I've reproduced these three here as a teaser only.
