notes from an antiwar rally

Date: February 15, 2003 | 13 Dhu-l-Hijjah 1423 Hijriah
Subjects: antiwar
No Iraq War I took part in an antiwar rally in Seattle today. I was never in a good place to judge the extent of the crowd (and I'm too short to see over it), but I would not be surprised if it was more than 10,000. The organizers are claiming over 50,000, according to one website. There was an hour-long rally followed by a three-mile march through downtown. It rained during most of the rally but had stopped raining until near the end of the march.

Yes, ANSWER was there, and so were some anarchists. I saw a handful of vegan activists calling for an end to the war on animals, and there were some other unusual groups like "Queer Jews for Peace". There were the usual college students and labor unions. And there were also lots of ordinary people. Families with children, people with their pet dogs, neighborhood groups, and regular folks, young and old.

There were a couple of off-message signs but really not very many and all by individuals not groups. The most popular sign by far was the "No Iraq War" sign pictured above. I carried a sign that said, "World Court Not World War" on an American flag background. I saw a lot of these as well. Another sign that was surprisingly popular was "Impeach Bush". There were some pro-France signs including one that said, "Thanks, France. A true friend tells you when you're making a fool of yourself". Many people liked a handmade sign that said "Stop mad cowboy disease".

Flyer for Seattle march There were quite a number of signs along the lines of "Support Our Troops: Bring Them Home" and various "Patriots for Peace" and even "Veterans for Peace". I also saw one that said, "I'm a patriot, not an idiot".

I saw less than a dozen pro-war people along the route. Half of them were carrying signs urging us to repent and accept Jesus as our savior. There were probably about a hundred people that didn't take part in the march but who took up places along the route with antiwar signs to cheer us on. For the first part of the march we were beneath the monorail and one of the monorail drivers was clearly a supporter because he honked his horn every time he went past overhead. One of the other trains had an antiwar sign in the window. We also got some support from drivers in buses and cars at the intersections we passed.

The protestors were at times more enthusiastic than organized. I think that for a lot of us it was the first time we had ever taken part in a protest march. The slogan that got the best response was the simple "Peace now" and the parts of the speeches that got the loudest cheers were the ones that took the tone of supporting our country's freedoms and our troops while opposing the war. Like I said, the bulk of the crowd was pretty mainstream. A lot of different people present for a lot of different reasons and the one thing that united us was the desire to stop this war before it starts.

you're so lucky to have been a part of this, mashaAllah...we wanted to go to London for the same thing but it was pretty cold and we didn't want to risk it with little Aliyah...!

I went to a march in Ottawa in January. Some very funny home-made signs (my favorite -- Halte a la Busherie -- a bilingual pun), and a very eclectic group of marchers.

You had you Muslims for peace (bearded and otherwise), your Unitarians for peace, your communists, Iranian socialists, Quebec separatists for peace and even Queers for peace, Punks for peace, and Anarchist lesbians for peace.

Yeah, we're almost as bad as the chickenhawks who want war really bad, but not bad enough to serve on the front line. Get off it, Ken. I'm unemployed, living off benefits, and only able to attend school because of worker retraining grants and a loan from my family. I don't have the money to travel to the next state much less to Iraq. I do what is in my capability to speak up for what I believe to be right. If you write me off as a phony because I'm not in Iraq, so be it.

I don't hate America. I just don't think that our government is doing the right thing. I love what America stands for, and I wish our government did too.

As for Bush, I suppose I feel the same about him that most conservatives did about Clinton.

Added: Oh, and here are some peace activists who ARE in Iraq. Make of them what you will.

Ken, we have already had this argument before and I really don't see any hope of resolving it. Whatever evidence I bring to support my claims you say is false, but you provide no evidence to support your own claims. Until we can find some common ground of facts to agree on, we really can't proceed.

As I have said many times, I believe that the costs of the war outweigh any of its benefits. I wish I did have an answer. I don't. I also believe that killing what may be tens to hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians and devastating Iraq's infrastructure is not the answer that will work. I have also said that unless we take the time, money, and effort to truly rebuild Iraq, it is likely to become destabilized and taken over by some OBL-clone who will be a far worse threat to his people, his neighbors, and the U.S. than Saddam Hussein is right now.

You haven't answered any of these questions.

Ken, I really don't see any point in this discussion. I have stated my views and their sources. You really don't seem to be understanding what I'm saying no matter how many times I try to say it.
