thinking about the implications for today, part two

Date: February 04, 2003 | 2 Dhu-l-Hijjah 1423 Hijriah
Subjects: analysis
Israeli astronaut Col. Ilan Ramon, in addition to bombing Iraq's Osirak nuclear power plant in 1981, also took part in Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon. A general overview of this military campaign can be found at Bloody Quagmire in Lebanon. Much more detail can be found at Lebanon 1982: The Imbalance Of Political Ends And Military Means, by Major M. Thomas Davis, U.S. Army. One of the most notorious episodes in this war was the massacre at the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps by Israeli-backed Christian militias (less well-known is what Syrian-backed Shi'i militias did later at Sabra and Shatila).

Equally notorious was the attack by Hizbullah on the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, leading to the death of 241 Marines. Beirut's Lessons for Future Foreign Policy, by Lieutenant Commander Steven K. Westra, U.S. Navy, argues that American policy-makers didn't understand the situation in Lebanon before sending troops there and didn't realize that Lebanese factions would perceive the American troops as having taken sides in the conflict and therefore to be a valid military target.

As the two articles by military analysts make clear, it is necessary for a country to have clear, narrowly-defined, and attainable goals when it engages in a pre-emptive or offensive war or the result is likely to be a disaster. This is an extremely important lesson for today, as America is about to embark on a pre-emptive war against Iraq. Once again, Col. Ramon's past history has an eery resonance with current events.

His history does seem to represent some of the more controversial parts of Israel's history. I would like to know what he thought recently about Osirak and Lebanon and if he continued to support Israel's actions in those cases.
