ups and downs of life as a student

Date: January 13, 2003 | 10 Dhu-l-Qidah 1423 Hijriah
Subjects: school, paralegal
It's been awhile since I was in school and I had forgotten how boring a writing class can be sometimes, detailing rules of proper usage and style and all that. That's how my Legal Writing course was the first few class sessions. Fortunately now we've gotten more into how to write certain types of legal documents.

Also boring is the Introduction to Law class I'm taking because I couldn't get into it last quarter. So far all the material is stuff I already covered in my other classes. It almost reminds me of being back in American Government class in high school.

Thank God my high school days are far behind me. I wouldn't go back if you paid me (well, unless you paid me a lot wink )

Hopefully my classes will get more interesting as the quarter progresses. After all, this is only the second week of the quarter. Also part of the problem is having two classes late in the evening; my mind tends to wander when I'm tired. Fortunately the last class of the day is also the most interesting of the three, or I would be asleep for sure, lol tongue

Legal writing classes are always the worst, especially since many of the documents they teach you to write - at least in law school - have little or no relevance to professional practice. Maybe the legal writing courses in paralegal programs are more practical, but I've been convinced for a long time that the law school version needs to be reformed. You don't want to get me started, really you don't.

And you couldn't pay me enough to go back to high school. Not even as a teacher.

All of my instructors are attorneys and every single one of them has said that the paralegal curriculum is much more practical than the law school curriculum and that they had graduated from law school without knowing how to do some of the practical tasks that paralegal students learn in their first or second quarter.

Writing classes are important to anybody who wants to make their living by what they write, but they can also be boring as hell. You'll probably find it useful, Yaser, but I don't know whether you'll enjoy it.

Of course, English was always my least favorite subject in school. It takes all the fun out of reading and writing.
