several hundred Muslims detained in CA for immigration violations

Date: December 19, 2002 | 13 Shawwal 1423 Hijriah
Fear mounts as U.S. calls on Muslim men to register

Foreign visitors tripped by deadline

Is the U.S. going to deport all immigrants who have visa violations, or only those who are unfortunate enough to have been born in a Muslim country? How is detaining people because of their nationality supposed to fight terrorism? What is this country turning into?

Update 12/19: See also Mass arrests of Muslims in LA and INS still holding foreigners. Thanks to Natasha of the watch for these links. Also, INS arrests hundreds from Mideast, Africa | They were held when they showed up, as requested, for a registration program and California Muslims Detained in Freezing, Overcrowded Conditions. Also, see the ACLU's statement

Update 2: Maybe it isn't just Muslims who are the target after all. Iranian Jews are also being held

Update 3 (1/2/03): Here's some more news stories from the last week or so: Is This a Way to Ease Muslim Fears?, Detentions in Cleveland, INS Misses Mark in Nationwide Arrests, Class Action Suit Filed to Halt Detentions, and Targeting Muslim Men is Unjust. And here's some commentary in blogs: Talk Left, Eschaton, Mikhaela's News Blog, Alas, A Blog, eRiposte, Long Story, Short Pier, and Politics in the Zeros

This is just wrong on so many levels. It has all the signs of a deliberate Catch-22: show up to register and we'll arrest you for visa violations (which are probably the fault of the INS backlog in the first place), don't show up and we'll arrest you for not registering. The fact that only people from certain countries are being called upon to register also reminds me of the registration of Japanese-Americans at the beginning of WW2 (although I think it's unlikely that things will go as far this time). Not to mention that, as Zack Ajmal pointed out, most of the people being targeted came to the United States because they opposed the very regimes with which Ashcroft is now identifying them.

I've also heard the reports of Iranian Jews being held. It seems like the targets weren't "Muslims," but "people from certain Muslim countries." As if that makes it better.

To be honest, my feeling is that the people who planned this out didn't realize that not all Iranian citizens are Muslims.

I just get so upset every time I think about this situation. Call me naive, but until the last year, I never thought anything like this could happen in America. With actions like these, America is heading down a very wrong path and I pray to God that it will turn around and come back, and not continue further down this way. This kind of thing goes against everything we claim to stand for.
