Then They Came for Me (updated version)

Date: November 23, 2002 | 18 Ramadan 1423 Hijriah
Subjects: article
Found at: Then They Came for Me

Then They Came for Me by Stephen F. Rohde, Esq.

First they came for the Muslims, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Muslim.

Then they came to detain immigrants indefinitely solely upon the certification of the Attorney General, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't an immigrant.

Then they came to eavesdrop on suspects consulting with their attorneys, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a suspect.

Then they came to prosecute non-citizens before secret military commissions, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a non-citizen.

Then they came to enter homes and offices for unannounced "sneak and peek" searches, and I didn't speak up because I had nothing to hide.

Then they came to reinstate Cointelpro and resume the infiltration and surveillance of domestic religious and political groups, and I didn't speak up because I had stopped participating in any groups.

Then they came for anyone who objected to government policy because it aided the terrorists and gave ammunition to America's enemies, and I didn't speak up because...... I didn't speak up.

Then they came for me....... and by that time no one was left to speak up.

Stephen Rohde, a constitutional lawyer and President of the ACLU of Southern California, is indebted to the inspiration of Rev. Martin Niemoller (1937).

Im sure ive read the other version of this incident but this DOES get the message across .. about the condemnation .. all i can say is that the fight needs to go on but yes the loss of civillians , women and children is unacceptable .

Silent Spring is absolutely right. A victory in this world means nothing if it was gained in a way that it detested by Allah SWT. On the Day of Qiyamah, it will be made void, and then where would we be. The only victory that counts is achieving Jannah, and the key to Jannah is to obey what Allah SWT has commanded and avoid what He has prohibited.

I posted this to my blog because I thought it was a good reminder: if we see something wrong, we need to speak up about it, even if only a few people are listening.

I hope you know that there are a lot of Americans who aren't Muslim, and who will probably never be Muslim, who would be outraged if action were taken against Muslims in this country just on the basis of their faith. It's a deeply offensive thing to every one of us that believes in our constitution and the principle that each of us is created equal.

Our ancestors were immigrants, too, and nobody liked them either when they first came. Eventually, we all learned to get along, and I have faith that one day it will be as unremarkable to be a Muslim-American as it is to be an Irish-American. Hope it doesn't take too long.

Thanks for visiting my blog, Natasha, and thanks for your comment! smile

Yes, I have generally had very positive experiences with ordinary Americans. It's the government that worries me.

God bless you.
