are there limits on free speech?

Date: November 16, 2002 | 11 Ramadan 1423 Hijriah
Subjects: thoughts
There's a huge furor at :SV: the last few days over a new policy implemented by the discussion board administrators, which is that avatars, signatures, screen names, post titles, and threads that are judged to advocate violence will be changed or removed. The policy had been announced earlier and apparently some people were already being asked to change their avatars and signatures. However, the firestorm only hit after the moderators removed a copy and paste of an Osama Bin Laden message that warned that American civilians will be killed as long as the American government is killing Muslim civilians. A lot of members feel that views should not be censored, even though they don't personally agree with those views. Instead, they feel that there should be free and open debate of these issues with both sides allowed to speak their opinions.

Obviously, since Soundvision is a privately-owned website, the owners and administrators have the right to determine what is said there and what is not and if they want to censor, they can do so. The question is whether this is really the best policy for them to follow.

What do you think? Should there be free debate with no censorship, or should a Muslim discussion board crack down on those whose views are considered extremist? Is any kind of middle course possible?

ideally the discussion board would encourage free debate without censorship.

but in today's world, where Muslims are under a microscope it's a different situation.

maybe SV is not in total control of the decision...

That's a good point, brother Adnan. I'm afraid there are no easy answers here and no solution that's going to satisfy everyone.

I'm kind of blank about the whole thing now. Whatever I wanted to say about it, I said on SV already... I am just worried that SV will lose more of the old members and keep the anti-Islam idiots, which I'm sure they don't want, but seems to be heading that way.

Yeah. SV hasn't really been the same this fall, even before this happened. But I fear that too many angry words have been spoken and too much damage has been done sad sad sad

Thanks for the comments, everybody. I have to apologize to Tora Bora. I was attempting to delete a multiple-post by Tora Bora and accidentally deleted one too many posts! embarrassed Sorry about that. Tora Bora had invited people to visit www.clearguidance.com

Once again, I do apologize for accidentally deleting Tora Bora's post entirely from this comments thread.

No problem sister.

The reason it posted so much times, was the connection was slow, and I kept on clicking on it.
