what's up with this feminist group?

Date: October 05, 2002 | 28 Rajab 1423 Hijriah
Subjects: feminism
Remember RAWA, the Revolutionary Association of Afghan Women? It's the one that was the darling of American feminist groups. According to The Silence Surrounding RAWA, RAWA seems to be collecting a lot of money but failing to actually use it to help anyone other than themselves. Why aren't those who support RAWA so much looking into what their pet organization is up to?

Some feminists seem to act like "liberating" Afghan women from the veil will magically solve all their problems. I would think that helping women get access to food, health care and other necessities is a lot more important than how the women happen to dress.

I don't understand people's obsession with the veil. If people don't like the veil, then fine, I don't really care, but some have a mission to get others to stop wearing it. If they want to talk about freedom, then doesn't that include the freedom to wear what we want? Most Muslim women CHOOSE to wear hijab, so why are they trying to oppress us by getting us to not wear it?

i think the problem they have is that they think that our thoughts are opressed too. and they wanna liberate us mentally and the first step is to free us from the veil.

poor things them.

wat makes them think that their movement is greater then god's command?

the least they could do is leave us alone.
we love our hijab.

we aint forcing it on em.

I agree with sister Cindy. Sometimes it seems like feminists only want freedom for women to be one way. If you choose to dress modestly, to stay at home instead of working, or to have a large family, they don't respect your choice.

salaam,

'A woman who thinks she is intelligent demands equal rights with men. A woman who is intelligent does not.' - Colette.

I have never liked the term feminist. i like the way i am and love the rights islam has given me.

i am not like a male and no male is like a female. and the difference should be acceptable to all. to be different in no way denotes inferiority or superiority.

i feel so sad for the afghanis. they have been left in the lurch by everyone.
