is this the kind of toy we should be giving to kids?

Date: September 27, 2002 | 20 Rajab 1423 Hijriah
Subjects: culture
J.C. Penney Catalog: GI Joe Commandeers Barbie's Dream House - I found this on the web and it bothers me a lot. There seems to be so much glorification of violence in American culture sometimes. TV, movies, video games, now toys like this. The toy comes with an American flag, I guess so that the children can show off how "patriotic" they are by playing with it. May Allah SWT protect and guide us all.

The more I think about it, the more it bothers me that kids are being given things like this to play with. Surely there are much better toys than to let them think destroying people's houses is "fun". I mean, that's a pretty realistic-looking damaged house.

The question will be answered when we see how sales are for the item. I believe that JCPenney has the right to sell this product, no matter how stupid it is, and that people have the right to buy it.

My hope is that no one buys it.

Thanks for your feedback, David. I agree with you. What particularly disturbs me about this toy isn't so much that it's warlike. How long have G.I. Joe dolls been around, after all? What bothers me is that instead of showing a soldier taking control of a military target, the soldier doll in in this wrecked house. I hope that people who do buy this toy will take the time to talk to their children about how much hurt and sadness would be caused by destroying a family's house.
