Al-hamdulillah, the lady in the paralegal department called me back today. She gave me the entry codes I needed for all my classes, no problem. I went right away to register. Al-hamdulillah none of these classes were full! The courses I'll be taking, inshallah, are:
  • Civil Procedures I
  • Legal Research/Writing I
  • Contracts
Contracts doesn't sound as exciting as Civil Rights Law, but it'll be extremely useful since of course lawyers spend a lot of time drawing up contracts of various sorts. I'm really pleased with the courses I was able to register for. Civil Procedures will provide an introduction to one of the two major branches of law (the other being criminal law) while Legal Research/Writing and Contracts are skills that I will need to have to become a paralegal.

What does paralegal mean, anyway? I mean, is there LA Law in your future, or what?

I understand legal...but paralegal...

Hmmm...there are troopers...and paratroopers....

I'VE GOT IT! Troopers are on the ground, and paratroopers drop from the sky, soooo...

Paralegal must mean that before each trial, you sky-dive into the courtroom...am I right? Am I close?

As a sidenote, the golBolution could use a legal advisor....(hint hint)

A paralegal is sort of like a lawyer's assistant. Paralegals can't represent people in court, set fees for legal services, or give formal legal advice to people. But they can do just about everything else lawyers do.

Most paralegals spend a lot of time doing research or investigation for lawyers and writing up documents for them and the like, as I understand it.

It's the research part that I like best smile

P.S. Think of paramedics, who are not really doctors (medics) but do a lot of the same things that doctors may do. Paralegals are the same way to lawyers (legals)
