'Are you one of those people that killed our people?'

Date: June 01, 2002 | 20 Rabi al-Awwal 1423 Hijriah
Subjects: islamophobia
This is what happened to me. I was on a bus traveling to a meeting with someone (that didn't work out, but that's another story). This woman behind me asked "What are you?" I said, "I'm a Muslim." After this, she suddenly started talking about how she got on the wrong bus and talking to the bus driver about it. Then she came back and said "Are you one of those people that killed our people?" I didn't know what to say to that, so I didn't say anything. The bus driver told her not to talk like that to other passengers. She said, "I'm an American." I said, "So am I." The bus driver said, "We all are here." Then the woman started saying loudly, "Let me off here, I'm not going to stay on the bus with her." So the bus driver stopped the bus right there and let her off. He apologized to me. Some of the other passengers said she was probably drunk and they thought they could smell alcohol on her.

For a couple of minutes I was just sitting there shaking and repeating "Laa hawla wa laa quwwata" to myself over and over because it was the only du'a I could think of. Later, the bus driver helped me find the right stop to get off at. He was really nice and it made me feel better after what happened.

How can people be so ignorant? How can they be so blind and have so much hatred in them for their fellow human beings? She's never seen me before and knows nothing about me except what I told her my religion is, and she thinks I "killed her people"???

May Allah SWT help us all.
